What is a GANT chart? Blush

ProggyMat · 30/01/2021 12:21

DD has done a Gantt chart for her EPQ- it’s in one of the sections of ‘her log’- so she has just informed me.
I hadn’t heard of them either!
She’s also said ‘I’m quite far behind on it, though’ Shock Grin

Shimy · 30/01/2021 13:14

GANT charts are popularly used in project management. It’s an easy way of monitoring progress and identifying milestones.

KingscoteStaff · 30/01/2021 13:48

I spent ages half listening to DD talking about her gantt chart, trying to work out the acronym, only to discover it was the name of the inventor!

EwwSprouts · 30/01/2021 14:18

Gantt charts are just a fancy form of to do list. Bite size chunks with by when, by whom.

KingscoteStaff · 31/01/2021 09:53

DD was scheduled to do ‘end of year’ exams the first week back after Easter - to be used for UCAS predictions - but school are now saying that they may move them later as they won’t have to schedule around public exams.

How are other schools planning end of Y12 assessments?

estherfrewen · 31/01/2021 10:06

@KingscoteStaff - exams 28 April here acc to website. Not heard anything yet but pushing them later would make sense. First parents evening this week.

ealingwestmum · 31/01/2021 10:59

DD’s are scheduled from 20 April Kings, same purpose. Not heard of any push back dates as yet.

Shimy · 31/01/2021 14:52

@KingscoteStaff Not heard anything yet.

FoolsAssassin · 31/01/2021 15:06

DS has some week after next then some the end of June.

ProggyMat · 31/01/2021 17:35

@KingscoteStaff DDs are in June followed by another parents evening at the end of the month.

Oblomov21 · 31/01/2021 17:47

OP.
Orange.
I finished off the old thread.

old thread

sandybayley · 31/01/2021 18:10

Here you all are.

DD is finishing off her prefect application and has just put in an application to be a vaccine meeter and greeter at the Royal Marsden. I feel like I have a good daughter today.

icanbewhatiwant · 31/01/2021 18:15

@Oblomov21 and @orangecinnamon did you both enjoy finishing off the old thread? 😂🤣

Oblomov21 · 31/01/2021 18:38

No. Not really. It was quite hard work. Nah it was ok.

orangecinnamon · 31/01/2021 18:59

That's so weird @Oblomov21 it wouldn't let me post anymore...just presumed it was because we were on page 40 but must have been my phone ...sorry!

Don't talk daft.

EwwSprouts · 31/01/2021 20:53

DS says they are having little tests in all subjects next week. I guess just checking how much everyone is taking in at the moment. School sent an email saying no exams until been physically back in school a few weeks.

sansou · 31/01/2021 21:39

DS is having standardised assessments online in a week's time. He has end of year exams in June after which, the majorityof Y12 from 4 to 3 drops a subject i.e. to keep their options open as long as possible which is a good idea imo. He doesn't have a clear idea what to study so at the moment, it's broadly heading towards Computing/Accounting courses. He's registered/attended the odd webinar/open day. I've left him to his own devices completely since I'm having a trying time ensuring YR9 DD is actually finishing off classwork/HW. I've just spent some of today going over balancing equations in Chemistry. It's torturous to say the least. She's definitely finding it harder to be self motivated although she loves not getting up early for school. Clutching a large glass of red wine!

Piggywaspushed · 01/02/2021 09:43

DS had assessments in every subject last week for some predicted grades coming out next Monday. This is when his 3 hour lessons make sense. Enough time to plan and do an essay.

20NewNames · 01/02/2021 15:29

Ah, have found you all. I was quite involved in the year 11 threads but had dropped out.

How are people's DC getting on?? Or more to the point are other struggling with motivating their DC or got any advice?

DS is hoping to apply for Cambridge but has lost motivation and just received some exam results back one still to come but the others were 2x Bs and a C. Now he knows why he got the B's as he missed a chunk of a paper out due to a timing misunderstanding (home exams and double maths hence 2 grades for the same subject). The C was for chemistry when he got an A in the end of term test for last term and therefore assumed he knew it...

So, how to motivate him and give him the tools he needs to learn? He is one of those that didn't really have to work at GCSE so the whole doing extra thing is new to be honest. We talked about him doing an hour a day over and above lessons/homework and he genuinely asked me what he would do in it. (Not being cocky but he really did not know what to do)

I think he is capable of getting the 3xA*s and 1A required for Cambridge (which I should add is his wish not mine particularly). We said just last week that he had a choice of whether to put in the extra work and get the grades (whether he gets in to Cambridge or not) or whether to do less work and still get decent grades but not at his potential. I said I thought he would regret the later option.

But how to motivate the poor kid when he is sat in a study on his own all day. He very rarely goes out and seems exhausted by this lockdown (he is usually very robust mentally so this is new).

Also on a grades side, if he's going to step up he needs to do it pdq as presumably the predictions will come from the summer exams.

His older brother was not academic so this is new to us. As is the whole university application thing, well we both went but 30 years ago! How to get them to be proactive about it all??

We have a virtual parents evening this week so we were wondering about messaging the teachers first as there is that capability. But what would we say?

Sorry, all a bit lost and would love to have some guidance from anyone!

orangecinnamon · 01/02/2021 16:41

Hi @20NewNames , welcome back

Lucy Parsons covers motivation and extended study on her blogs. I used to be a member of the study skills club. I found it really pragmatic and useful. She has loads of free articles and resources I tap into from time to time

Thank you so much @orangecinnamon, I will get looking into that.

Hopeful201 · 01/02/2021 19:25

Hi, I was in the thread a while back but dropped off. Back looking at how everyone is doing. Such a trying time for all.
My DS seems to be working better on his A levels, not difficult as he hated half of his GCSE's by the end! He is doing 4 but drops a subject in May I think, is anyone else in that boat?

Shimy · 01/02/2021 20:23

Hi Hopeful DS dropped his 4th subject at the end of last term and quite a few posters dc have dropped theirs as well but that was discussed on the old thread that's now full.
Ds is also enjoying his subjects although complains a bit, that Politics is boring or rather the teacher is making it boring in their monotone voice. Otherwise, I think all the young people are just cracking on as best they can.
