What's happening with boarding schools atm?

Just to declare my interest, my family often host international students who board in England during holidays but I know that some schools have been staying open during holidays. Wondering what the situation will be in February half term? And, out of interest, what has happened to boarders this half term during lockdown - have they all gone home? TIA

The ones I know have have either all gone home or are with their host families in the UK

Ours has international students boarding who couldn't get home, and children of key workers, vulnerable etc either boarding or day students.
Mine has full timetable and lessons as normal but online.

Ours is closed bar some overseas boarders who couldn’t get home - but that was only a handful. Not sure they will be back this academic year at all.

about third in school, some at home, a few with guardians

Overseas boarders have option of being in school or at home - some are and some aren't. One school has about 20% of boarders in - including some UK. Lesson in classrooms with video link for those not in school. Other school has a handful of UK pupils in and all lessons are remote.

StepOutOfLine · 19/01/2021 19:51

Some are completely closed and all the boarders have gone.
The school I liaise with has made its houseparents redundant.

combatbarbie · 19/01/2021 19:52

Closed to everyone.

Thanks. Quite a range. Really interesting. I guess some small schools will be driven out of business by the impact of this.

You may find this weird, but mine is usually a boarder and she still has to sign in at bedtime and in a morning.
I don't mean morning registration, that is separate.
I suppose the rationale is they are on roll so school are respnsible, still.
Makes me laugh though, as she forgets and I get a call from school, is she in bed? lol.

My friend's son is at Winchester and is at home learning online.
Our school is about 15% boarders and some opted to stay at school over Christmas due to travel restrictions and are learning remotely from the boarding complex. Have to say that the school went all out for those kids- the boarding staff gave up all their own holiday time, the Head joined them for Christmas lunch, they all cooked it together, and each child got a sack of presents.
Some kids came back early to quarantine for this term before the announcement was made, so are now stuck there too.
