We just want our kids in school. Please. If at all possible.

And driving lessons. And good Mental Health. And happiness.

In-and-amongst all this Covid nightmare and lockdown debacle.

I’ll answer to most things 😀

EwwSprouts · 14/01/2021 16:19

Kingscote thanks that is inspired. Think it will be a really useful focus for DS who isn't clear on what he wants to study beyond 'biology'.

Fiddlersgreen · 14/01/2021 17:19
Sorry for jumping to conclusions ChristopherTracy

Someone may have already posted this so apologies if they have but this came up on College feed recently for apprenticeships:

nas.vfairs.com/en/register
Thank you for posting that, have persuaded DS to sign up

crazycrofter · 14/01/2021 17:29

@FoolsAssassin the thing about living in Birmingham - whilst it's obviously a huge city, it appears to me (I work at the uni) that most 2nd/3rd year students live in Selly Oak, which is right next to the university. At least, every house in the streets next to the uni seems to have a 'to let' sign and Selly Oak is full of students. Selly Oak is about 4 miles out from the city centre, so I'm not sure whether you'd ever need to go into the city if you didn't want to! I guess I'm wondering whether the actual experience would feel like living in an urban village?!

But obviously Leamington Spa is a much smaller town, as are Bath, Loughborough etc... I suppose this is why it's helpful to visit places!

FoolsAssassin · 14/01/2021 17:31

events.ratemyapprenticeship.co.uk/

And this has just come up,.think it's different

FoolsAssassin · 14/01/2021 17:32

That’s really helpful Crazycrofter, thank you 🙂

orangecinnamon · 14/01/2021 18:17

I love the fact that Sussex and Birmingham practically have their own train stations...well Birmingham actually does!

Thanks for the apprenticeship links @FoolsAssassin. The only thing other than Music Dd would like to do is events/marketing she could have a look.

Does anyone take school leavers nowadays without experience in officey type jobs ?

EwwSprouts · 14/01/2021 20:49

Orange a few years ago my nephew was hired as the office gopher by a bank after failing year1 of degree. They put him on a business apprenticeship after 6 months, which lead to OU business studies degree & now putting him through further professioanl exams. Still in his 20s.

MirandaWest · 14/01/2021 23:13

Was looking at the driving page on gov uk again and looks like they can practise driving again. Doesn’t mention not being able to practise in England.

Directionerforever · 15/01/2021 08:14

Oh that’s good news at least.

estherfrewen · 15/01/2021 10:06

Thanks for posting that @MirandaWest - will sort out insurance again! Might wait until half term and better weather and he can drive me to the shops at least

icanbewhatiwant · 15/01/2021 10:57

@MirandaWest yes...I posted the other day saying our instructor said we can practice as long as essential journey. We don't go out really though. So struggling to find an essential journey. I have an online Tesco shop weekly.

Directionerforever · 15/01/2021 20:30

There appears to have been some kind of personality transplant occurred in DD this week. I sent her those links for the uni thing and the apprenticeship open day, with a mild ‘might be worth looking at’.

And lo! Tonight she says that she has signed up for both ‘but they’re both on the same day so I’ll have to organise how to see what’s happening with both of the’ AND! ‘I was awake until 1am sorting out my life plan, I’d like to go to uni to do marketing with the ultimate aim of being a super yacht broker. But I’m undecided about whether to go straight to uni or do a year working on yachts instead to get to know the industry’.

Genuinely nearly fell over with surprise.

crazycrofter · 15/01/2021 21:53

Wow @Directionerforever! That’s pretty amazing! And not your run of the mill life plan either!

I had a brief spark of interest last night when dd asked what was the difference in salary between clinical psychologist and occupational therapist. I sent her the details but she’s lost interest again now!

EwwSprouts · 15/01/2021 22:00

Loving super yacht broker as career choice!

WhichTaMin · 15/01/2021 22:02

Hello people.

Nothing to say - but I’ll sit here in the corner with a cuppa and listen - if that’s okay?

Directionerforever · 15/01/2021 22:11

I’ve pushed my luck and sent her the ucas link for marketing degrees. I’ll maybe ask next week if she looked at it! I’m pleased there seems to have been some thought processes happening though.

Grin that was time well spent sorting out her life plan!

What about a marketing degree apprenticeship in a SuperYacht brokerage idontknowtheword are there any near you? Or looking at Universities that have placement links with those kind of companies?
orangecinnamon · 16/01/2021 08:52

I feel invested in this plan GrinWink

Directionerforever · 16/01/2021 10:19

Haha @orangecinnamon I’ve thought similar so I’m going to look at some stuff but it’s providing that careful balance between doing some of the work for her and inspiring her and doing it all for her and her completely closing me down. She did say matter of factory yesterday that all the big money brokerages are in the states so I can expect her to go and live out there for a while.

Directionerforever · 16/01/2021 10:20

*Matter of factly 😂

ealingwestmum · 16/01/2021 12:48

Ooh I do love an unusual career plan Smile

orangecinnamon · 16/01/2021 13:04

Meanwhile Dd has told me all about her 'Country Hotel wedding' this morning I feel she has her priorities wrong. It will be in the New Forest don't you know as a summer destination wedding sounds bloody expensive
