We just want our kids in school. Please. If at all possible.

And driving lessons. And good Mental Health. And happiness.

In-and-amongst all this Covid nightmare and lockdown debacle.

I have a year 7 and year 12 (and 2nd year university) listening in on lessons today, my year 12's lessons sound more fun...lots of discussion and Ds is joining in a lot. But ds in year 7 doesn't say anything much...the others in his year weren't saying much either. It must be so hard for the teachers trying to plan online live lessons and keep them all interested. The art teacher sounded brilliant, she was getting them all to rush round the house finding colourful objects to make pictures on the floor (year 7 this is) it kept ds busy anyway. It'll be interesting to see what they do for the music lesson! I have nothing but praise for the teachers.

Ds2 seems happy with lessons online and his A level work. That's the main thing. He's still moaning at business studies being boring though.

Oh @KingscoteStaff that's so sad.Sad Hopefully can they get her another device from somewhere? I know there are some schemes going on but not sure HOW accessible they are in real life.

@Monkey2001 you are so right our year 12s will be mostly ok. Dd went to a college so was all mask wearing and not hanging around. It seemed to make a difference as she was not required to self isolate at all last term. In terms if her music she is getting on ok with online stuff and even managed to squeeze an online performance of 'Still Hurting' that the college shared on Facebook.

I have offered online support services to my sister, niece is 8 and adores her cousins so they can help!.

Monkey2001 · 07/01/2021 23:27

@KingscoteStaff they were talking about that on news tonight. BBC are coordinating people donating old computers and tablets, sounds like that family needs some. Sad

KingscoteStaff · 08/01/2021 00:55

I parcelled up 5 or 6 books for her and left them outside her flat on the way home, but mum is very volatile and might bin them as potential germ carriers...

Oblomov20 · 08/01/2021 04:24

I, like icanbe have a yr 7 & yr 12, and both seem to be doing ok.

But it's early days isn't it? We a red only a week in! Telling ds1 is was initially for 6 weeks till Feb 1/2 term is one thing. Now telling him it's more likely it'll be after Easter holidays, at the very earliest, is not so palatable.

@Oblomov20 hello fellow year 7 and year 12 mum. As I said above my year 12 is getting on and enjoying the online lessons. It's a bit harder for year 7 though.

@MirandaWest

I can’t see things being “normal” by 2022 exams. I may be feeling particularly pessimistic today though Grin
You're not alone. That's exactly what I'm thinking but keep being told I'm being pessimistic here too. 'It'll all be fine and dandy by next yr' Hmm.
lljkk · 08/01/2021 15:51

I am clocking onto thread to find people to commiserate with.
16yo DS has attended lectures today (phew).
Much "boring!" moaning but he did it.

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2021 16:08

I ahve an old conked out laptop... how do I get rid of it??

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2021 18:20

Thanks sprouts.

icanbewhatiwant · 11/01/2021 12:52

I have changed ds's theory test. It can be done. It was feb half term. So have gone for Easter holiday instead. 31st March was available at 8am. It will take an hour to get there and park. Ds will freak out at 8am. So had to book 2 weeks later than than. I hope we will be out of lockdown by then!

estherfrewen · 11/01/2021 12:58

Have rebooked DS theory for April. His birthday is Wednesday and even though no lessons DH was going to take him for first drive until we heard from driving instructor last night to say that no learner driving practice allowed! I could scream. The one thing he had to look forward to....

Directionerforever · 11/01/2021 13:04

DD has her practical booked for 1st March. She tried to cancel and rebook and said it wouldn’t allow her. Do I need to check?

She drove me to the shops the other day and I’ve just seen the stuff about no practice at all on gov.uk. FFS. What else are they going to take from our kids. Driving me on my essential journeys that I would be making with or without her and then staying on the car really does not make a difference to the English (aware advice in rest of UK different) effort against Covid fucking 19.

Oh I’m in a bad moped today 😂

Directionerforever · 11/01/2021 13:05

Mood. I can’t drive a feckin moped. And it’s not like I could learn right now either!!!

icanbewhatiwant · 11/01/2021 13:32

Does it say that on government website? I've been out with ds. Not far though. I was going to drop 2 old laptops to our local pc shop for use in schools this afternoon. I was going to let ds drive.

MirandaWest · 11/01/2021 14:13

DS has been going out with DH (went out yesterday) but looks like that needs to stop. Wonder why there’s a difference between England and Wales and Scotland?

Also going to get in touch with insurance company as we’ve paid for insurance until some date in February - am hoping they can just extend the expiry date

ChristopherTracy · 11/01/2021 14:20

Small win today, DS actually used his webcam in lessons [as instructed] - hurrah!

estherfrewen · 11/01/2021 14:28

Just cancelled DS insurance too. Am seriously pissed off. He was so looking forward to Wednesday. Birthday and Christmas was lessons and insurance. Now got rock all.

Directionerforever · 11/01/2021 14:32

Yeah DD has been going out with me too, whenever I have needed to do a journey she has driven. She then stays in the car and drives me back. Looks like this is going to have to stop. It’s so disheartening for them.

Monkey2001 · 11/01/2021 14:37

I think that driving when our for an "essential purpose" must be different than driving just for practice.

Monkey2001 · 11/01/2021 14:38

Oops, just read the gov page. That is stupid!!

icanbewhatiwant · 11/01/2021 14:48

I think we will be into lockdown well into March. So that's a long time without driving. I don't know if schools will go back before the end of lockdown. They might.

DH has a sports car...he'd not driven it for 6 weeks or so, so he just ran me into our nearest town as I've dropped 2 laptops off to the local pc shop as they are taking them in for schools. I said if there are police out stopping people they'd definitely stop us in a sports car. No police about though. They were stopping people driving through the town first lockdown. I'm sure they'd pull someone over with L plates.

MirandaWest · 11/01/2021 15:03

Have heard back from the insurance company (is a PAYG insurance). They can’t extend it but we can cancel it and although there’s a £10 cancellation fee they will either refund that or give us credit for when he’s ever allowed to drive again.

I’ve been OK mostly but for DS this is rubbish - hasn’t seen his girlfriend since just after Christmas, can’t drive now and his dad seems to be opting out of spending time with his children (we’re divorced and the DC usually spend at least every other weekend there and time during the week) but XH said could they stay here for now. DS would like to see his stepbrother (also in year 12) as well but can’t see that happening either, with XH being vague
