We just want our kids in school. Please. If at all possible.

And driving lessons. And good Mental Health. And happiness.

In-and-amongst all this Covid nightmare and lockdown debacle.

Hi, we are in Tier 4 too. DD2 had to isolate for 10 days so it was a quiet Christmas for us.

Piggyinblankets · 28/12/2020 09:02

Oh no monkey ! What a frightening experience.

I had a friend rushed into hospital Christmas morning suffering a horrendous miscarriage. She wasn't allowed her DH with her either.

It's all a mess.

Hope your DH is being well looked after and you are looking after yourslef monkey.

BlueMarigold · 28/12/2020 09:02

@Monkey2001 Sorry to see this. Hope you DH is home soon.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 28/12/2020 09:10

Oh my goodness @Monkey2001: how is he doing? and how are you & DSs managing: how long will be he in after the op? It's so tough managing stuff with hospitals remotely, I'm finding...

We had the opposite, with FIL coming out of hospital on boxing day, so DH brought MIL down on Christmas afternoon (we need to keep them apart for a while as he's been in with covid, and she's just had a op for lung cancer so really needs not to get covid!) - it's been an odd Christmas though, that's for sure, with all of us in masks/keeping distance as the kids aren't 10 days out of school until yesterday (although we have all had negative covid tests privately, just being 'belt and braces as she's high risk).

Oh, and yesterday we discovered the soil pipe from our bathroom spraying water over the back wall (trying to keep the main bathroom free for MIL). Such Christmas joy!!!

FoolsAssassin · 28/12/2020 09:12

Oh Monkey how scary for you all. Hope he is home soon and agree with the bit about looking after yourself, that’s a big shock.

Really sorry about your friend Piggy

Our Christmas was quiet with just 3 of us as DD decided to be at her house as they moved lockdown forward . She was here briefly so 2 Christmas dinners.

ealingwestmum · 28/12/2020 09:37

Oh Monkey that is one Christmas to remember (or forget!); hope all goes well this week with the stent fitting and recovery. Flowers

ChristopherTracy · 28/12/2020 10:37

Sending Flowers @Monkey2001

ExpensivelyDecorated · 28/12/2020 10:52

Sorry to hear that @Monkey2001, hope he makes a speedy recovery. Stents seem to be a very straightforward process, my DF had several a few years ago and recovery was very speedy.

Sorry to hear about your friend too @Piggyinblankets.

Your Christmas sounds complicated @AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore but glad you managed to see your ILs. We haven't seen ours since one day in their garden in July, as they have been under Tier 3 or whatever it was back then the whole time and are a hundred miles away.

I'm glad I didn't take the DCs with me when I popped down to see my
79 yo+ parents on Christmas Eve now, as DD was in the period between being in contact with a positive case and getting notified to SI. It probably would have been fine as she still has no symptoms and we sat outside, distanced, with masks, but would have been a worry that we could have done without.

Oblomov20 · 28/12/2020 11:32

So very sorry to hear that Monkey. Hope you are doing ok. Thanks

EwwSprouts · 28/12/2020 12:19

Monkey I hope your DH is doing ok. To go with the jigsaws BrewCake

Oblomov20 · 28/12/2020 12:23

Are your dc doing any work? Ds1 is doing a very small amount. He has 'end of unit' tests all the time. He says he only has these, in the next 2 months - ie no biggie mum.

Not knowing, I asked what the next big thing was. Does he have big tests / exams this side of Feb 1/2 Term? Is he supposed to be organising a revision schedule? What's next?

He says not. Is this true?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/12/2020 12:55

@Monkey2001 I’m so sorry to hear about your DH, I hope he makes a speedy recovery, what a horrible Christmas for you all. Flowers

We had a quiet one as we’re in Tier 4 but actually it was quite nice and chilled. We have been playing monopoly and cluedo and also untitled goose game and gang beasts on the Xbox both of which are very entertaining (said as a non gamer).

I have told DS that revision starts today. He is meant to have mocks starting n the 11th although who knows what will happen with that now. They were meant to be deciding on what A levels to continue with based on those results.

KingscoteStaff · 28/12/2020 13:03

@Monkey2001 Do hope all is ok at yours. How scary for you.

DD was told she should do 40 hours on her EPQ over the holidays, so she's nibbling away at that. She had a bunch of unit tests at the end of term, so doesn't have any specific revision to do.

Lots of jigsaws here, too. We are running out of parks, so it's Boris Bikes today!

ExpensivelyDecorated · 28/12/2020 13:08

DS has been doing an hour or two a day, two of his subjects are BTECs so there's lots of coursework. He is feeling unsettled with all the will they / won't they about schools reopening, he badly wants to go back but is also worried about Covid.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/12/2020 13:12

@Monkey2001 I hope dh's op. goes well. How frustrating to not be able to visit. We had an elderly friend fall on Christmas Eve...so she's spending Christmas in hospital. More than anything she's worried about catching covid. He dh spent his first Christmas without her. They are both in their 80's. What a mess!

Not heard from school about the return yet. I'm quite happy for my year 7 to stay off however long it takes. But Ds2 needs to be at school really. I feel that no school work from March to sept. and no GCSEs much have a big impact on their education. Obviously I want it to be safe too.

FoolsAssassin · 28/12/2020 13:31

I hope your friend gets home soon icanbewhatiwant

DS has 4 pieces of homework for the holidays as per a usual week. He is taking his Head’s orders to be well rested for next term very seriously indeed!

He is home the first week apart from possibly being tested on the Friday as things stand at the moment.

Seeline · 28/12/2020 13:36

Some of you have had eventful times! Hope everyone is in the mend soon. Ours was very quiet with just the 4 of us for the first time ever.

DD has exams the week before half term so is meant to be doing some work, but isn't very enthusiastic! She keeps saying she doesn't know how to revise 🙄

All we've been told is that she will have the first 3 days back online, but nothing about tests, or what happens after those 3 days

icanbewhatiwant · 28/12/2020 13:55

@Seeline really they haven't had to revise for proper exams have they? Ds didn't really bother much for gcse mocks. He's had a few mock exams this term and says he's finding it hard and his mind is going blank. Not good really. It must be quite stressful going from no actual GCSEs onto A levels.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 28/12/2020 14:12

My DS was lucky with that, he did two L2 BTECs alongside GCSEs and they had exams in Feb, albeit only counting for a part of the whole result, so he did get a bit of the "real exam" experience. Not the same as taking a whole set of GCSEs together though and it does worry him. They also haven't had the full lockdown learning experience that other years had for the summer term as they weren't working for anything (he didn't have any SI time last term either) so that's a bit of an unknown too.

EwwSprouts · 28/12/2020 14:43

DS has done zero work. Bit worrying as supposed to be sitting official parts one of an AS in the next couple of weeks. Also I'm not understanding why it hasn't been cancelled?

For anyone's DC interested in medicine/biology tomorrow londoninnovation.org/symposium/ School recommended.

ProggyMat · 28/12/2020 14:49

@Monkey2001 wishing your DH a speedy return home and recovery Flowers
DD is cracking on with her EPQ aided and abetted by the pile of books brought by Santa.

crazycrofter · 28/12/2020 14:50

So sorry to hear about your dh @Monkey2001. I hope he’s better soon. What a Christmas!

We’re still mid covid. The kids are recovered but dh is worse than ever today (day 9) with bad nausea and coughing. I’m mainly just suffering with tiredness and a cough. Christmas has been a bit low key obviously and I felt bad for the kids, especially ds who loves playing games. Dh can’t even sit up for long enough to play a game. We’ve watched a few films and did a zoom quiz with family though.

Dd was getting stressed about work as she’d planned to get it done before Christmas but had covid. No exams or anything, just homework,

Heifer · 28/12/2020 18:39

Sorry to hear about your DH @Monkey2001, I hope he is soon home and well. Same to those of you who have been ill (or family members).

We've had a very quiet Christmas here (although no different to usual tbh). Just the 3 of us, playing draughts, table top curling, fuzzball and a new PS4 racing game. Have had a really nice time.

I don't think DD has done any work yet (I could be wrong). I think the plan is to start tomorrow when I also start working from home again. We've tried to stay out of the office so we can be free to entertain DD when needed. She has just gone out to meet a school friend for a meal in a pub garden (thank goodness for patio heaters).

Those with DS/DD working on their EPQs - do you mind me asking what the topic is? DD is planning to do one - although they don't start until May with aim to be ready for Dec.

MirandaWest · 28/12/2020 20:44

@Monkey2001 hope your DH will be able to come home soon.

DS has done no work from what I can tell. Although DD (year 10) who was working too much before Christmas has hardly done anything either.

Our Christmas kept being made smaller - originally DHs son was coming down from Scotland from 23rd to 26th and we were then going to stay with my mum and dad down south on 26th until 27th but that had to be changed to a lightning visit on Christmas Day but then when DS had to self isolate until 27th we had to stay put. Was a nice relaxed day. DC now at their dad’s house for a few days.

We know they are having online lessons starting on 5th January (extra training day on 4th) supposedly for the rest of the week but suspect it may be for longer. We’re in York, still in tier 2 and currently although cases going up they’re not very high but not sure what will happen. Am very glad Dh and I (both work from home) have a converted garage we work from so DS and DD can organise themselves in the house....

Wheresthebeach · 28/12/2020 22:48

@Monkey2001So sorry to hear about your DH. Fingers crossed he’s home soon. Very scary for you.
DD doing a lot of work as they have tests when they get back. Mainly working on Chemistry which is the one she finds hardest. School hasn’t had many cases so far but I do wonder if people haven’t been getting tests unless it was typical symptoms.
