Bebras

My DD year 8 entered a competition called Bebras at school in the intermediate level. She can log in and see her score. I've googled a bit and can see that it relates to computational thinking. Does anyone know which score would constitute a distinction and how much you need to get through to the next round?

Just saying hi, my child got through to the next round last year but it was all cancelled due to covid

Singingrain1223 · 06/12/2020 22:43

You need to be in the top 10% to get through to next round but I don't know what mark. A ds at my son's school got full marks.

@AveEldon Hi! Sorry to hear that, we're in such weird and unpredictable times. Congratulations to your child, they did really well!

@Singingrain1223 Thank you. Yes, I was wondering what the mark cut off was for top 10%. DD is nowhere near full marks though so she probably won't get through, just curious.

Hi OP - my DS is in Y7 and was told that a distinction at that level (Juniors I think) was 120 out of 200, which might give you a very rough idea but I'm afraid I don't know about Intermediate. DS got 184 Grin

ExpulsoCorona · 07/12/2020 23:39

Wow @Sparticle!!! Congratulations to your DS. My DD said a distinction at intermediate was 113 out of 200 but does not know what score you'd need to be in the top 10% (and go through to the Oxford computing challenge). Presumably your DS will be through to the next round with such a high score?

Thanks @ExpulsoCorona - he was annoyed because someone else in his year got 196! Juniors is for years 6 & 7 though so that might explain the high scores. I don’t know if anything will be going ahead next year so we will wait and see...

My son came home last week to say he got the top score in his class (Y9) and in the top 5 score in the whole Lower/Middle School. He's never been top of anything. I think he said there is another round which, reading the notes here, seems to be the case. Is the second round just at school too? My son does not actually feel he is very good at computing at all (he virtually did none at his primary), but says Bebras is more about logic? He did no preparation at all but should he, if he's through to the next round??

ExpulsoCorona · 08/12/2020 22:25

@Sparticle lol I can well imagine that would have been annoying!

@1970smum Sounds like he did really well!!! What score did he get? I think anything more than 113 is a distinction. Bebras is about logic, I don't think they were meant to prepare for it. The top 10% usually get invited to take part in the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge (oucc.uk/) in Feb/March but I'm not sure if it will be online at school or not. That one does need preparation apparently, it tells you what to prepare on the website I linked to.

Ah thanks. I don't know his score but it definitely was a Distinction. But if it's 10% nationally maybe he won't be invited back? I'll find out what he scored. Funnily enough, my DS2 came back yesterday (Y6) saying he got a Distinction too, one mark off the top score whatever that means so we'll see. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look at that!

My DS Y6 (Juniors) got 184 (out of 200) - would love to know what the cut-off score for qualifying for the Oxford Computing Challenge is though.
