We are an oversea parent so it is difficult for us to arrange the school visit this year. My son is now 13 year old and would like to join year 9 in 2021. We applied the following schools and hopefully if we can get the offer from any of them, may I have your comment of the following schools?
He is a happy and talkative person. But he is a little bit lazy and need the encouragement. He is good at mathematics, and he doesn't really like music. But he also have interest in Sports but not strong. We would like to find a good academic, happy school for him which can enrich his interest at maths/science.

  1. Uppingham
  2. Shrewsbury
  3. Bromsgrove
  4. Cheltenham College
  5. Bedford
  6. Sherborne

Many thanks.

Are you planning for him to be a boarder? If so, check that the schools all have enough students in at weekends so that he won't feel like he is one of the only ones there.

Also, if you are coming from overseas, you may want to think about whether you want a school with lots of overseas boarders or just a few. There's no right or wrong answer as it's a personal choice.

If you really have no experience of the UK school system/the schools you have applied to, then you may as well wait and see what offers you get and then see if you can do a Facetime or similar. Most of the schools also have quite a bit of video footage on their websites.

Ideally you want to put him in a school which suits the child he is, not the child you want him to be!

Hi @kct18
Its so tricky when you cant visit. Perhaps they could offer you a virtual tour??
Are you looking for boarding or day schools? ...and in what location??
All those you list are rather - well - old fashioned. Is that the type of school you are interested in??

Changemyname18 · 13/11/2020 22:10

You need to check they have space for that entry point. Assume your DS was born between Sept 2007 and Oct 2008, if older and you are looking at Year 10. Agree with earlier posters that these are very traditional schools. You need to speak to them to determine this, and then decide

Bromsgrove and Warwick School year 9?
I am oversea parent. Just have luck to have the offer from both schools.
My boy likes sports but not strong on specific kind of Sports. He is passive and need encouragement but not shy.
Can I have more information about both schools for me to make the decision?

You are aware that there is no boarding at Warwick (apart from a very small number in the sixth form)?

Changemyname18 · 05/12/2020 12:09

crunched website very clearly states boarding for all years?

We can only speak to the first two schools mentioned but have first-hand experience of both Uppingham and Shrewsbury at 13 yr old entry and there is no comparison. Uppingham excels in every regard. After pastoral and educational concerns at Shrewsbury, we moved our son from Shrewsbury to Uppingham. He has settled beautifully and has had so much interest and encouragement at Uppingham that he is now motivated to achieve all A/A* at GCSE and is so very happy there. It is a very supportive, kind, and inspiring environment. It starts at the top and the headmaster runs a really tight ship...everything is first class, organized and professional. Can't recommend
Uppingham school highly enough.

Second Uppingham - our DC went there and were very happy.
Very different personalities and interests but both were catered for . Very strong House system with supportive Housemasters , house tutors and fabulous matrons. Pastoral care is very good.
Huge amount to do outside of academia, at all levels - sport, music , drama
Is a full boarding school so always friends around .

kct18 · 08/12/2020 23:50

May I know the number of Chinese or Hong Kong in year 9 in Uppingham?

Have PMd you

Tartanshores · 09/12/2020 07:32

Have PMd you . It is worth asking the school as each cohort is different , as is each year group and each House.

Since I just got the waiting in Uppingham, so I would like to estimate my chance to enter Uppingham if possible.
