Are these standard across schools, and if so what do the numbers mean?
I know we will have a parents evening sometime in November and I can ask then, but I have had DS' English assessment marks and I am not sure what to make of them.

I think what DS has been given are the same sort of thing. Basically they’re predicted GCSE grades if your child carries on at the same pace as they are currently, ie they don’t work really hard to improve, or start slacking and let their grades slide. DS’s are based on CAT tests and progress so far. The numbers are the new GCSE grades.

9=A**
8=A*
7=A
6=B
5= high C
4= low C
3=D
2=E
1=F

I wouldn't compare between schools as they all use them in slightly different ways. It's best to ask school directly if you're unsure.

Every school is different. Some give potential grades. Others give "current target grades". Others only give effort/mastery grades.

Right now, our school isn't giving mastery grades, because of the lockdown. They're just giving engagement/effort grades.

We give 5 (normally low ability - most won't reach this), 6s (middle ability/average tends to depend on how they apply themselvess and general attitude to learning, some thrive, some sink) and 7s (higher ability, most will get higher than this)

SpeedofaSloth · 28/10/2020 17:33

Must be a different system then, looking at the letter it talks about a range of 3 to 6 only.

I clearly need to ask about this at parents evening!!

I would just want to know where my child is now and where this places them within the cohort, also what make up of low attaining, middle attaining and high attaining pupils there are in the cohort.

And go from there.
