How much do you help your Y7 child with work?

Growing up, my parents help me a lot at primary school with Maths and English
but not at all at secondary school, and I'm wondering if this expectation has changed.

At primary school we used to do Maths and English CGP 10 minute tests at home every week. Should I continue this in year 7 or is their school and homework enough?

DD is at a non-selective girls comp.

I think it's great if she can carry on doing the 10 mins test, but maybe more independently? But it's up to you and your dc, if she enjoys it, why not. And also you can re evaluate when she has settled and know how much homework she gets everyday/week.

It’s still lunch time at DS’s new Grammar school and there are 4 new pieces of homework on Show My Homework. So I think just homework for us here 🙈🙈🙈

At my DDs' secondary school, they recommend - after settling in - an hour a day of additional work (or as they've reworded it this year: 30 minutes a week per subject which is an hour a day if we add in weekends). They're also clear that they shouldn't be spending more than that on school-related work in KS3 which is a nice clear boundary my DD1 and I appreciate.

So, mine do their homework and then if there is time left, I usually add in something else. I keep a few things around for this, usually in areas they're struggling, are really interested in or areas they're unlikely to get homework (like PE which fits all three for DD1). Otherwise, they'll read for the rest of it, but CGP 10 minute tests could be handy for this. I stop them at the hour mark, though with DD1 she'd then also have music practice.
