Helping 12 year old with homework

Do you help your 12 year old with their homework? I mostly monitored what DS was doing last year particularity at the start as it was his first year in 'big school'.

I looked over some of his geography homework yesterday and while he had answered the question it was a terrible answer in that he was just parroting back a sentence from the book not really giving his own answer.

I've talked to him about what I called A work and B work and how to get an A you needed to expand on your answer and not just copy a line from the book but I didn't have the energy for it yesterday. I would have needed to sit with him and talk him though a better answer before he had written anything.

I would help if he(12, yr8) asks. Otherwise I leave him to it. Haven't checked his homework all year last year, it will be the same this year.

I did a lot of legwork for year 7 about how to research for homework, not just reading the top result and using that but comparing that to other sites.

Plus school did a whole thing about trusting your sources evening saying the same thing.

I would be checking books after the fact to see what a teacher picked up on.

No, I’ve never checked on their homework and their schools have never expected me to.

You need to leave them to it at that age, the teachers will guide him

My youngest is DD15 and I stopped checking form about P7/ year 7/8?
I think it’s best that they learn from their mistakes, it’s not their own work if mummy is pointing out the correct answer. Same with packing school bag, if they forget and get pulled up at school well they’ll not do it again.
Instil independence not reliant on mum keeping them right.
