Godalming College (Surrey) or?

My ds (year11) wants to go to GC. Whilst reports are good, I'm concerned that it will be too easy for him to slip under radar, he lacks self motivation and focus and really needs quite a lot of monitoring to achieve to the best of his ability. I know if he wants to go to uni this is a necessary skill but he just isn't there yet ! Alternatives would be a school sixth form (Howard or George Abbot) or smaller independent school. Don't think he would get into more competitive schools. He's looking at mostly 6/7 at GCSE. Grateful for thoughts/experiences.

Have generally been impressed with Godalming. If you're looking for somewhere that pushes, it might not be the right place. However, in my experience, it's a good idea to let them have an experience of the consequences of their behaviour sooner rather than later. In 2 years time, when they head off on a gap year or to university, they'll be expected to identify and solve their own problems and own their failings. Much kinder to let them 'fail' now, while surrounded by family and teachers who are willing to help them sort themselves out.

Is he at a school with a sixth form now or does he have to move (or just wants to anyway?).

My DD has just started 6th Form somewhere new - she mentioned Godalming which wouldn't have been right for her but I might look at it for her sibling.

Which side of Guildford are you?

Thanks for responses. No sixth form at current school, we are E of Guildford but could go either way. Whilst I agree that some self reliance is required, ultimately I'm concerned that if it doesn't materialise, two years is not long and he won't be on track to get the grades he might otherwise be capable of to open further options post A levels.

Everyone I know who went there enjoyed it. I get the impression it works best for people who aren't massively academic, and just want a bit more freedom than school, more options in the practical and arts subjects than local schools offer. Several of DC's friends and relatives went there.
