Ripon Grammar school

We have decided to move from Wakefield to Ripon to be within the Ripon Grammar school catchment area for our DS who will start Year7 in 2022.We will sell our house and was thinking of moving permanently to Ripon, however we just read about sinkholes last night.😳My DH is least bothered as he thinks people wouldn’t have bought properties in Ripon if it was that bad. I read sinkholes can appear every 3-5 years and it’s pretty much freaking me out.Don’t know where do we stand in regards to insurance if the back garden disappears in front of my eyes.Anyone here who lives in Ripon/ nearby and knows about it.

I used to work with a girl many years ago who lived in Ripon and they had a sinkhole in their garden - had to move out of house and never went back. A friend of DS goes to Ripon Grammar - they live between Harrogate and Killibghall

Yeah, I would be extremely wary of buying in Ripon for that reason. I think the problem is in the north of the city mainly, so look in the south and do your homework! Also, lots of great surrounding villages to choose from.

@estherfrewen Thank you 😊. I am going to show your message to my DH.Buying a house is one of the most important investment you make and I wouldn’t want to buy in an area prone to sinkholes.Your DS’s friend must have done really well to get into RGS as I think Killinghall doesn’t fall within the catchment area.

@FetchezLaVache Thank you so much. You are very helpful. You took the pain to message me the catchment areas in my earlier post.Very much appreciated. We will keep it in mind while searching for a house. Will come back here for advice once we finalise a property.

@confusedandsad2019 the girl I mentioned lived north of the city. DS friend was tutored for 11+ as Harrogate schools don't do it. Perhaps just a small birth year - he will be going into year 12 now. If you lived south Ripon you could look at Harrogate too - all excellent secondaries

@estherfrewen 😊 Thank you.North of Ripon is definitely not in our list now.We were looking at houses in Burton Leonard.Do you know the area well as we it will be perfect for us as it’s showing between Harrogate and Ripon.Yes 11+ tuition is required if you want them to get good marks and secure a place in the Grammar school.

Burton Leonard is a lovely village. I think they are doing some new build houses there. Good midpoint between Harrogate and Ripon.

I went to RGS (20 years ago now) but lived out of catchment. It’s a lovely place to live, I know quite a few families who live there now and don’t seem to have been impacted by the sinkholes

Riponresident · 29/08/2020 18:45

I went to the grammar school as a teenager and am now an 11+ tutor and live in Ripon itself so happy to advise!

We bought in the West of the city about four years ago and when we bought, we paid an extra £30 for a geological survey which stated that we were on the boundary of where they thought was at risk of sink holes. It hasn't cost us any extra on our insurance, and the closest sinkhole there has ever been to us (to our knowledge) was at the grammar school itself!

Almost all the Ripon villages are lovely – it just depends whether you'd rather live in Ripon itself or somewhere further afield.

@estherfrewen Thank you 😊.Will come back here if we find a house in between Harrogate and Ripon but still be within the catchment area.

@Zippy1510 From my post you can gather that I am the one who is afraid of taking risks😂.My DS will have very little chance even if we opt for the boarding option as only 14 places.☹️

@Riponresident Thank you so much. Its something we will keep in mind when we do the survey.
