Does anybody's have any recommendations? It is for the DD of a friend of mine who is not very academic and is struggling to find her interests. Going into Y9 and will need to choose her GCSEs soon. Any tips on how to help? She is into art a bit, struggles with maths, reasonably good with languages but a bit immature and a bit lost. Plus adolescence hitting soon so I am a bit concerned!

Do you mean novels ?
Surely she has read some in the past. What did she like?
Does she like TV/films? If yes - what type. If she likes a certain genre of telly programme then try a book of the same genre.
If it's just reading in general then what sort of art does she like. Maybe some art magazines to read.

Not enough information. And beyond books, which might not be the answer, it's hard to advise without a better idea of what role you play in her life.

Does anyone take her to art galleries? Could you?

Theatre? Bloody Covid spoils this suggestion - but you might choose a contemporary play available on iTunes and give her the play script. Then she could watch the play afterwards.

It doesn't sound as if she plays an instrument? That often helps with focus, concentration, sense of achievement, etc.

It's not clear if you're describing someone lacking guidance, like minded companions or simply access to books ...
