Secondary School Laptop Requirement

My DD's school is now requiring the girls to buy and use a 2in1 laptop in school. They are moving everything online because of Covid. They have yet to release their exact requirements and will be buying the laptops in bulk and reselling them to the students. Is anyone else's school doing the same? I'm really dreading to see what this laptop is going to cost.

I think when schools buy the laptops in bulk like that they usually get them at a discounted price and should therefore hopefully not charge parents too much for them either! That's my theory anyway lol.

My DD's school did this years ago, they only had to pay insurance (£35 a year I think) or could buy for £400. Was a really good model normally over £600

We've had to buy ours laptops to a certain specification. The schools are trying to ensure everyone always has access and have said that they will be doing far more online going forwards. They gave us various options for chromebooks or laptops varying in price but we were encouraged to buy from the recommended list.

Yes. All up it is costing over £700. And this is with the school buying in bulk!

MigGril · 23/08/2020 16:55

And are the school expecting every parent to be able to buy a laptop at £700? Even those who aren't on fsm who should get it free anyway can't always afford things like this. That's totally unrealistic amount for a lot of families.

No!!! This is what I was afraid of, DD's school is quite tone deaf when it comes to these things. We were also told that laptop would only last 3 years and then need to be upgraded.
