GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

@KingscoteStaff glad the hoover worked and great results!

Well done to all those with the results they needed, too many to mention.

Those that didn’t Wine Flowers

Those that are still waiting for emails, DC to get up, later time slots fingers crossed for you

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 09:27

Cherry - so so pleased for you. Fantastic news for your DD

Janie74 · 20/08/2020 09:29

Congratulations everyone on the great results, and commiserations with those who have been disappointed.

It’s very good news here - 5 9s, 4 8s and a 7 (for the dreaded maths) - speechless! Grin

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2020 09:31

Not heard from her yet shimy!

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 09:32

@itsgettingweird Amazing news, congrats to your DS

Comefromaway · 20/08/2020 09:33

Dd has what he needs for college including a very nice 8 in music. Rather shocked at the 3 in Business Studies though. He’d been getting 4/5 all year including 5 in his mock. However his last report just before lockdown his grade had slipped on his last report.

makemyweek · 20/08/2020 09:33

Happy boy here - 4 9's, 4 8's, 7 and a 6. Broadly in line with parent's evening discussions about mock grades being harsh and the teacher's belief he could increase most by a grade at exam.

Congratulations to those who are happy with their results. Sorry to hear of the disappointments and hope that sixth form plans will be sorted without too much additional stress. I'm sure we've all had enough of that by now.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2020 09:33

One wonders how different this thread might have been today...

StillDumDeDumming · 20/08/2020 09:35

Dd passed everything which is a shock and good marks in her chosen A level subjects. So all through to 6th form. Some of her friends failed the lot and this so could have been her. She got going just in time

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 09:37

Excellent cherry and piggy

Ds is still completely baffled how he got a 5 in English language 🤣 best hope we had was scrapping a 4 for both.

That one may have been a GAV Grin

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/08/2020 09:38

Congratulations to everyone - fantastic results, and some wonderful personal triumphs!
Commiserations to those who are feeling deflated today Flowers

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 09:40

Congrats @Cherryonthetop2019, @itsgettingweird, @FoolsAssassin, @StillDumDeDumming

@Comefromaway that’s a fantastic mark in Music - well done him.

Just watching the BTEC car crash on the news. Truly unbelievable.

loveislouderthanwar · 20/08/2020 09:40

All 5s & 6s here! Distinction in English spoken. Onto A levels now and no resits! I'm over the moon, she was thinking she may get mainly 4s but nope.

She has had such a rough ride with dyslexia, SPD, depression, S/H and a health problem I'm so proud of her.

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 09:41

OK, so DS doesn't get murdered.

Failed English Lit but other grades were all 4-6 (he failed half his mocks so better than it might have been). He was disappointed in Physics - he was hoping for an 8 or 9 in the exam but expecting 7 in teacher assessment. He only got a 6.

And he couldn't remember his maths grade (!!!!!!!), so if that wasn't one of the 6s he is now scrabbling for sixth form choices (he wanted to do maths and physics A Levels)

TheGodmother · 20/08/2020 09:42

Fuck sake! Still I email wihh thy results.

After 3 phone calls to school finally got told that they are having a problem attaching the results to the emails!

Absolutely pathetic excuse. So no results until god knows when!

This school is normally brilliant but have really let themselves down over the last few months.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 09:43

Well done everyone and commiserations to those whose grades were lower than they'd hoped. Fingers still crossed for those waiting.

Another happy one here

4 x A* (maths / numeracy / physics / chemistry)

6 x A (English Lang / history / geography / welsh / RE / biology)

1 x 7 (economics)

2 x B (English lit / German)

Distinction in add maths

Mostly as hoped / expected, a couple of surprisingly generous ones (I'm looking at you, economics). DS is absolutely delighted and relieved that all the uncertainty is over. PHEW

QuacksInTheDark · 20/08/2020 09:44

My DS is expecting results via Gmail but as it appears to have gone down 6.30am he has received nothing so far. 😩

OublietteBravo · 20/08/2020 09:45

4x 5s
4x 6s
1x 7

We’ll take that - although 5-5 for science is a bit disappointing (due to teacher illness back in October everyone in her set had to do foundation paper mocks - I fear this is the reason she didn’t get 6-6, which is more in line with her ability). Perhaps it is balanced by a better than expected 5 in French though.

Fiddlersgreen · 20/08/2020 09:52

Fantastic @loveislouderthanwar really happy for you and DD!

@RedskyAtnight Eng Lit isn’t one you have to retake until you pass is it? Think it’s just Eng Lang? How can he check his maths grade?

@TheGodmother oh that’s terrible!! Hope it doesn’t take too long!

MirandaWest · 20/08/2020 09:52

Very happy here Smile

DS got 4 x 9, 4 x 8, 4x 7 and 1x 5

Monkey2001 · 20/08/2020 09:53

Card from DS1 to DS2...

TerrifiedandWorried · 20/08/2020 09:54

12 9s and an A for additional maths. There have been tears here this morning.

TerrifiedandWorried · 20/08/2020 09:55

Posted here because I can't tell anyone in real life

estherfrewen · 20/08/2020 09:56

0DimSumMum0 · 20/08/2020 09:57
