GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

999 replies

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

TheGodmother · 20/08/2020 09:59

@TerrifiedandWorried
Oh my freakin' god you must be so so so proud, you must want to bust!! I'm crying for you! Hahah that and the stress of waiting for the email. Well done your DC! ❤️❤️❤️

My son is just on the borderline, 3s or 4s. He needs 5x4s to get into the college he wants!

AWanderingMinstrel · 20/08/2020 09:59

I know what you mean TerrifiedandWorried we can never tell people in RL- anonymity is godsend!!

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 10:00

That’s great @singingstones and @MirandaWest.

@RedskyAtnight are you going to send him back in to check the Maths grade??

OrangeCinnamon1 · 20/08/2020 10:00

Little orange got 5/ good pass for French, Maths and Science all the rest 7/A and a 9 for Music (expected as coursework done, dusted and submitted).

Great results for her A levels , English lit, Sociology and Music. She wants to go on to do Music at Uni

@RedskyAtnight

OK, so DS doesn't get murdered.

Failed English Lit but other grades were all 4-6 (he failed half his mocks so better than it might have been). He was disappointed in Physics - he was hoping for an 8 or 9 in the exam but expecting 7 in teacher assessment. He only got a 6.

And he couldn't remember his maths grade (!!!!!!!), so if that wasn't one of the 6s he is now scrabbling for sixth form choices (he wanted to do maths and physics A Levels)

He has a 6 in maths. Phew. But he also has a sixth form interview which school said would only be for those who are "non-straightforward". DS has met the entry criteria for what he wants to do, so he should be straightforward.

At least interview is at 10, so not too long to sit and bite my nails.

He won't resit English Lit - he has a 5 in English, so the necessary pass.

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 10:00

@TerrifiedandWorried

12 9s and an A for additional maths. There have been tears here this morning.
Shock wow
Londonmummy66 · 20/08/2020 10:00

A mixture of 7s 8s and 9s here so DD really happy and has met her offer to go to boarding school - so now I'm going to have an empty nest come September. Can't quite get my head around that at the moment.

SO pleased for those who have done well and commiserations to those who are disappointed.

AWanderingMinstrel · 20/08/2020 10:01

DS has gone back to bed- oh to be s teenager!!!

PaddingtonPaddington · 20/08/2020 10:03

@RedskyAtnight well done to your DS. Fingers crossed for the interview.

How did the Bakewell tart turn out? I’m busying myself making DD a cake for when she returns.

loveislouderthanwar · 20/08/2020 10:04

I'm so pleased for you all. They have done us proud and worked to the best of their abilities. Hope everyone gets what they need to move forward. X

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 10:06

Congratulations! He passed everything except Lit as you said but passed English the most important one. Hope he gets his 6th form place. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the new sixth form threadSmile.
20Newnames · 20/08/2020 10:07

DS is really happy.

3x9s, 3x8s, 2x7 and 2x6. Pretty much what we would have been hoping for if he sat the exams, well maybe one more 9 but still a really pleasing set of results.

Can't say it to many people either as it is a lot higher than most of his friends (large comp) so nice to say it here. I have just been saying he "is happy". But yey!!!!!! GrinSmileGrinSmile

TerrifiedandWorried · 20/08/2020 10:10

Thank you guys! It's actually really lovely to be able to tell someone her grades. It just looks like I'm showing off if I say but she worked so hard and deserves every one of those. She went to an average local academy and they couldn't be more pleased for her. The head just rang to congratulate her!
Well done to everybody's DC. What a year for them. Hopefully they can all move on to the next stage now.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 10:12

Amazing! @TerrifiedandWorried
And all those with 8s and 9s up to their ears!

MirandaWest · 20/08/2020 10:12

@KingscoteStaff, @estherfrewen I hadn’t properly twigged our connection Grin

desertcoffeeyoga · 20/08/2020 10:13

Straight 9s and one 8! Couldn't be prouder ! Thank you all for your support .. looking forward to a good night's sleep tonight !

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 10:13

Well done little @OrangeCinnamon1

Cherryonthetop2019 · 20/08/2020 10:14

@RedskyAtnight yay! You just be feeling relieved! Lots of schools don’t even do Eng Lit, so great news he has what he needs to move forward.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 10:15

Well done little @RedskyAtnight and good luck with the interview

Bakewell tart is good thankfully and was on the breakfast menu this morning Blush

IHeartHarryStyles · 20/08/2020 10:16

DD’s results not what we hoped for. All 4’s with one 5.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 10:17

Sorry to hear that @IHeartHarryStyles

Hope she is ok. Is it enough for the next step she wanted to take?
