GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

Well done to everyone for their results so far - some very chuffed dc on the thread, I should think

We've yet to leave the house (not sure why they can't email)

beenrumbled · 20/08/2020 09:05

Well done everyone so far, and commiserations for those not getting the grades they expected.

DD's appointment to collect is at 10:20 sharp. We don't know what will happen with her BTEC, and we also think the will get marked down in her History ( had a few issues with the teacher, went to HOD after last mock who reviewed it and upgraded by a full grade- she went from a predicted 8 in YR 9 to getting 4/5 is class tests & mocks)

Hopeful for the rest.

Benjispruce2 · 20/08/2020 09:07

@FAQs DD got a 9 in a Geography mock but an 8 in result. Happy with this as the mock is not the same as the real exam and she was surprised at the 9. Could it be a similar for your DS?

MirandaWest · 20/08/2020 09:08

I have got DD to come along with me. We are waiting in the car. My main problem is roadworks near school and parking is a pain!

Benjispruce2 · 20/08/2020 09:09

Good luck!

crazycrofter · 20/08/2020 09:09

Just rang dd from the lounge as we have to leave in half an hour and she was still asleep! She sounded really confused! So it was just me tossing and turning and dreaming of 5s and 6s all night then!

Shimy · 20/08/2020 09:11

@RunningHoops That is a stupendous result! 😂😂
@FlyingPandas fantastic!😁😁

Of all ds’s results we are most excited about Maths and French. Never thought he’d get a modern language and had resigned himself to this. But put in some last minute hard work. Im still pinching myself.

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 09:13

Hoover successful!
9 9s and 1 8! Who needs French anyway?

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 09:13

@MidLifeCrisis007

Anyone got a result for Ad Maths yet? DD got all her results at 8.00am but not that.
He's da FSMQ result cane with his GCSEs.

He got a B Smile

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 09:14

DS has finally left the house.

I told him to ring/text as soon as he knew (he's going straight out with friends afterwards).

His response?

"Maybe"

Murdering first born due to inability to keep you informed about GCSE results is acceptable, yes?

AWanderingMinstrel · 20/08/2020 09:14

He’s done really well 3 9s , 4 8s and a 7. Took one last year in year 10 and studying an A level Instead of a GCSE so we are so pleased for him (he will do the A level at end of year 12 if all remains equal).

Paranoidmarvin · 20/08/2020 09:14

@RedskyAtnight yes it is. But I still think u will have to phone him to tell u.

Fiddlersgreen · 20/08/2020 09:15

DS just text me, he got:
1 x8, 4 x7, 1 x6, 2 x5

Very pleased!! His school is new so no idea if these were put through the algorithm or not but he did much better than he thought!

MirandaWest · 20/08/2020 09:15

Other ones who went in after him have come out...

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 09:15

Oh and just to fill in the missing gap of ds 4-9's today he did get a 7 in GCSE statistics last year 🤣

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2020 09:16

So we are back! Delighted is an understatement (although will admit some minor annoyance about business on here!).

IT B
Science 7 7
History 8
Maths 7
Music 5 phew
Rs 9
Spanish 8
Lang 7
Lit 8
Business 8

Onwards!

Fiddlersgreen · 20/08/2020 09:19

That’s great @Piggywaspushed!!! Well done!

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 09:20

Brilliant @Piggywaspushed and @AWanderingMinstrel.

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 09:20

So many good results - well done to all those DC.

And many commiserations to those who got results that were lower than they'd hoped for.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 20/08/2020 09:20

So, so relieved!!

6 in Eng Lit / Eng Lang, Graohics, Food Nutrition, Art
5/5 in double science and 5 in maths
5 in RE
4 in geography

FFT data projected 2 or 3 for every subject as she is dyslexic and has inattentive ADHD. We are so, so proud of her!

Hope everyone else is as happy! Off to celebrate. Xx

Shimy · 20/08/2020 09:20

@FAQs

A couple of fails here, and scrapped through the rest. It’s so annoying, daughter had an accident last year which meant she missed some exams but the most frustrating is she achieved a 8 in English language in the mock and a 6 in the final result, is it worth appealing? Otherwise she has 3/4/5s.

She is in a girls Grammar and very bright but not motivated until the exam is on top of her.

@FAQs so sorry to hear the results aren’t what you wanted. I think you should definitely appeal the English result and anything else you can. I’m not sure new guidelines re appeals are out yet but now they should be any minute now. Still well done to your DD for her achievement inspite of her setbacks.
HPFA · 20/08/2020 09:22

@shimy

It must have done but I can't see how the bump was that high. We thought she might get the 8 in RS despite her mock being a 7 because we knew she'd probably been ranked No 1 but this we were not expecting.

She's thrilled but her first thought was that it must be a mistake and that wasn't false modesty - she literally doesn't get it.

Shimy · 20/08/2020 09:22

@itsgettingweird @Piggywaspushed

Yay!!! We did it ..fantastic. Piggy how did it go with the friends DD?

If she is ranked no 1 then that result is entirely in line with what you’d expect under the algorithm. Unless, you’re saying no one in previous yrs had ever got a 9 in that subject. Sounds like the 9 was well deserved to me.

FoolsAssassin · 20/08/2020 09:27

Mix of 9s and 8s and a 7. Has what he needs for 6th form. Huge relief.
