GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

Oh and a B for fame

motherstongue · 20/08/2020 08:49

DD has always felt in the shadow of her big brother who got 11 A* this time 6 years ago and carries a great deal of anxiety with her but she has done amazing getting all 8s & 9s so really equivalent to her brother. I’m so delighted for her.

So she is feeling great before starting her new school this morning. Very proud mum, dad and big brother too

loveislouderthanwar · 20/08/2020 08:50

Still no results!

I emailed them then received an automated 'school is closed' reply! 😳

Well done to everyone else on their ace grades!

Good luck to everyone collecting grades! Xx

RunningHoops · 20/08/2020 08:53

10 X 9s here. Smile. Very happy and he worked hard.

Toofaroutallmylife · 20/08/2020 08:53

Sorry, not been on the thread before but need to vent! Results due by email at 8, but gmail is down globally so no sign!

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 08:54

More great results - well done everyone!

DS has now emerged from his room. He can pick up his results from 9. I am struggling to understand how he can be so calm - I would be one waiting outside school for doors to open, not still at home at 8.55!

Nard75 · 20/08/2020 08:55

Well done to everyone who has had their results this morning. DS getting his at 1000.

Dohorseseatapples · 20/08/2020 08:55

frustrationcentral

So to clarify, is everyone expecting today's results to be the higher of either CAGs or GAVs? Rather than the original plan of CAGs today and final results next week?

I tried to look it up yesterday and only managed to find one article stating it was all today

Final results today.
CAG or adjusted grade - whichever is higher.

frustrationcentral · 20/08/2020 08:55

Some amazing results on here!

Northumberlandlass · 20/08/2020 08:55

Just catching up! Looks positive overall so far. Delighted for the surprise increases & heartfelt sympathy for those disappointed.

DS is up & adamant he won’t open the email 🙄 so I shall update with his results at midday. Stubborn bloody child!

FlyingPandas · 20/08/2020 08:55

Amazing results so far!! Too many to name check separately but a huge well done to the Corona Cohort!CakeFlowersStar

Had to wake DS as couldn’t bear it any longer. Realty pleased (and slightly shocked but in a good way!)

1x9, 6x8, 2x7

So thrilled for him. Despite the fact that he really doesn’t seem bothered at all!!

Good luck to those still waiting. Love this thread!

motherstongue · 20/08/2020 08:56

What a nightmare Toofar

MidLifeCrisis007 · 20/08/2020 08:56

Anyone got a result for Ad Maths yet? DD got all her results at 8.00am but not that.

Monkey2001 · 20/08/2020 08:56

@FAQs sorry to hear your DD did not get what she would have got in a real exam. Maybe she should consider taking English Language in the autumn if it might help her confidence. I think the autumn exams are a better option than an appeal if it is a subject which won't have gone stale since lock down began, but the appeal process should be clarified over the next week or so. The autumn results can only go up as they get the best of the 2 results on their certificates.

When the exams were cancelled, one of DS's early conclusions was that it would be very stressful if A levels were the first external exams they do. I think that if you are continuing with a subject with disappointing results to A level it may be worth taking the autumn exam for just those subjects to get some experience of taking an external exam, particularly if the autumn exams are free, which they might be.

I do not think it is worth considering taking subjects which would involve a lot of additional work, other than English and Maths, unless a DC is very disappointed.

whoamitojudge · 20/08/2020 08:56

DD still asleep, we’ve still got another 3 hours to go.
Congratulations to everyone who has got their results and good luck to those still waiting

Dohorseseatapples · 20/08/2020 08:57

The 9s are A**
Higher than an A*

Benjispruce2 · 20/08/2020 08:57

Over the moon for DD2. Results pretty much as her mocks in March.
Eng Lit, Eng Lang, History, Geography, Drama, Food all 8s, combined Science 7&6, Maths 5.GrinStar

JMG1234 · 20/08/2020 08:58

9s for my son. Surprised (and feeling a bit guilty) with the French grade. He'd worked hard at French but just sneaked an 8 in the mocks and I can't imagine him having got a 9 in the actual exam. Still, I guess that's the system, it just feels a bit strange.

Good luck to everyone else, must be torture waiting to go into school...

Rhubardandcustard · 20/08/2020 08:59

Congrats to @sandybayley @daddaddad @shimy @Monkey2001 and anyone else whose got their results for the dd ds so far.

frustrationcentral · 20/08/2020 08:59

@MidLifeCrisis007

Anyone got a result for Ad Maths yet? DD got all her results at 8.00am but not that.
I think someone up thread said they aren't available till next week?
Shimy · 20/08/2020 09:00

@HPFA

Well, this is what she did:

History - 9
RS -8
English Lit -7
Chemistry -7
Physics -6
English Lang - 6
Physics - 6
German -6
Maths -6
Dance -5

She's absolutely thrilled and we are too but - I literally don't understand the 9 in History. She's never been graded above 7 in any mock or other exam - the last PE we had the teacher was saying he wanted her to aim for an 8.

Oh well, I guess she's just a beneficiary of the system!

The anomaly with History might have something to do with her algorithm awarded grade. Remember it’s the highest grade of the two, so it might have come from there.
Pippilangstrumpfie · 20/08/2020 09:01

My ds got his Ad Maths result this morning. He got an A Smile.

Fiddlersgreen · 20/08/2020 09:01

Wow all these 9s!! That’s incredible!

We are hoping for 6s and 7s here but there may be a 5 or two

TheGodmother · 20/08/2020 09:01

Email should have been here by now!!! WHERE IS IT??

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 09:02

Great news @PaddingtonPaddington, @FlyingPandas and @Benjispruce2.

Still no sign of DD. Getting hoover out now.
