GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

We’ll take it!!!

Thanks to everyone Flowers

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/08/2020 08:34

Well done everyone so far. DS still not getting up despite his little brother going in to wake him. Hmm

FloweringFlowers · 20/08/2020 08:34

Mix of 6s/7s plus a 8 and a 4 - which is in Spanish and she’s over the moon with that (and pleasantly surprised). She’s very pleased.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/08/2020 08:34

DD got

2x9
4x8
2x7
1x6

and she already had an A in ICT from last year.

Chuffed to bits for her!

frustrationcentral · 20/08/2020 08:35

Well done everyone!

Fiddlersgreen · 20/08/2020 08:35

@Heifer @Monkey2001 well done to your DC, great results!

Lots of success stories so far. My DS is about to head off to school. He wants to wait around for his friends in the later time slots (defeats the point I know)
I said he could decide whether to call/text me or whether to wait until he gets home to announce his grades.
That could be hours away though!! Sad

A couple of fails here, and scrapped through the rest. It’s so annoying, daughter had an accident last year which meant she missed some exams but the most frustrating is she achieved a 8 in English language in the mock and a 6 in the final result, is it worth appealing? Otherwise she has 3/4/5s.

She is in a girls Grammar and very bright but not motivated until the exam is on top of her.

PaddingtonPaddington · 20/08/2020 08:36

DD did so well! She was predicted 4s and 5s and one 6 at the start of year 11 (before being diagnosed with SEN) and got:
Music 7
Drama 6
English lit 6
English lan 6
History 6
Textiles 6
Maths 5
Combined science 55
French 4

I cried, DD shrugged and said not too shabby! She’s gone off with friends into town.
She worked her socks off in year 11, and it paid off. I can’t believe it.

KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 08:38

Fantastic news @DadDadDad, @sandybayley, @Shimy, @Alsoplayspiccolo, @Monkey2001, @Heifer!

DD still determinedly asleep despite brother stomping about and Nextdoor’s builders hammer drilling???

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 08:39

@Shimy

3 9s 5 8s 1 7 1 5

Yay!!!!!hope everyone else gets good results.

Dd got a 4 in French but had actually achieved a 5 in the mock Confused You have my sympathies, our dds sound similar, my dd pulls it out of the bag on exam day usually. Flowers

Sorry to hear about accident. That English sounds very out. Worth asking school why?
AWanderingMinstrel · 20/08/2020 08:42

He got 3 9s , 4 8s and a seven- WOW so proud!!!

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 08:42

FAQS - sorry to hear you're disappointed. I think there is no right of appeal unless you can prove process error. Might be worth talking to the school though. Trouble is every school has come up with results differently; you might have just been unlucky that your school was one of the strict ones.

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 08:43

We drove because we live so far from school. Most students here alone so asked ds if he wanted me to park in side street and wait.

He did!

So say here whilst he walks up to the way they are allowed in, gets his results and walks back down the way they can come out.

I had limited nails this morning. Now I just have finger tips Grin

GU24Mum · 20/08/2020 08:44

Ours is overall pretty fair - definitely not much sign of inflated grades and she dropped a grade in her best subject (but did slightly better in Science) so it's probably more balanced than it could have been. She's ended up with 1x9, 3x8, 4x7 and 1x6. She's relieved that I won't try and cajole her into any resits!

ProggyMat · 20/08/2020 08:46

It’s wonderful to see this thread moving so fast with good news!
Well done every one! Star

Shimy · 20/08/2020 08:48

@DadDadDad, @sandybayley, @Alsoplayspiccolo, @Monkey2001, @Heifer

Amazing results! and so glad the dc are happy. Although DS slightly doubting himself but due to his OCD.
I can’t cant believe DS got a 7 in Maths, he was completely written off for that subject just 4yrs ago.

itsgettingweird · 20/08/2020 08:48

So not only did ds pass English he got a 5 in language HmmGrin

4,5,5,6,6,8,9/9

Amazing for the child who 4 years ago tried to hang himself so he never had to go to school again.

HPFA · 20/08/2020 08:48

Well, this is what she did:

History - 9
RS -8
English Lit -7
Chemistry -7
Physics -6
English Lang - 6
Physics - 6
German -6
Maths -6
Dance -5

She's absolutely thrilled and we are too but - I literally don't understand the 9 in History. She's never been graded above 7 in any mock or other exam - the last PE we had the teacher was saying he wanted her to aim for an 8.

Oh well, I guess she's just a beneficiary of the system!
