Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

@Devlesko

Also, will teachers have used assessed grades right up to cut off date. I mean the late bloomers who had low predicted but really shone at the end. What will happen to them.
I agree. I really hope that DS school didn't include year 10 work/grades. The pupils were not aware that there would be retrospective continuous assessment in their GCSE grades, so it is not right to do that. And summer-born pupils are always playing catch-up. My DS is nearly a year younger than the oldest in his year. His year 10 was not stellar. Plus he had undiagnosed mental health issues - but for some reason the school kept it confidential from his teachers, right up to the end.
Devlesko · 17/08/2020 17:04

I know all our teachers will be busy sorting this out, but can't wait to hear from them on here.

stoneysongs · 17/08/2020 17:05

I wonder what the mechanism will be for appealing CAGs. I'm sure there will be people who feel that they're not fair. @neutralintelligence was it you whose school did CAGs based on Y6 sats?

neutralintelligence · 17/08/2020 17:08

@singingstones - well, I don't actually know how they did the CAG because I won't know the CAG until Thursday. But yes, in general when working out predicted/target grades they have relied heavily on y6 SATs (plus some socioeconomic factors that won't be great for us relatively since most of DS school could afford private but choose an extra BMW or foreign holiday instead).

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2020 17:08

I think now assuming the moderated grades might have been higher might be wishful thinking! I wonder about mocks too!!

I assume they will still have appeals for CAGs but the same silly convoluted ones...

Gav on BBC News now, being irritating.

Shimy · 17/08/2020 17:09

What a rollercoaster it’s been! I hope this u-turn will cover those who did BTECs as well. Where does this now leave IB? Will they get their CAGs retrospectively? One lesson I’ve learnt from this whole process is to try and stick to the curriculum followed by the majority because when things go wrong, they have a louder voice.

The poor IB lot have all been forgotten about and it’s not fair at all.

frustrationcentral · 17/08/2020 17:09

I may have missed this answer, but do we know if teachers were able to factor in the extra grade/s a student could have got after all the revision etc? Or is it simply what they would have got based on how they were performing in feb/March?

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2020 17:10

He is blaming Ofqual.

When we were doing CAGs we kept being told to watch out for unconscious bias which may have led us to massage a little the grades of some disadvantaged students at grade boundaries...

The Ofqual algorithm militated against those same disadvantaged students. they should have spotted that!

pasanda · 17/08/2020 17:11

Bloody hell. This may work out so well for dd.

She had decided not to even try with double science or geography as she found them too hard. Wanted to concentrate on the other 6. Although I always believed CAG's were the fairest way forward, for all the reasons mentioned in this thread, her teachers for these subjects knew of her plans so the CAG's for these subjects would probably have been 1/2. If the algorithm placed her higher up at say 4/5 she can choose those??? (I doubt the computer would be that 'thick' tbh but you never know!)

Totally unfair in a way but I won't complain if it gets her into 6th form!

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2020 17:15

Different schools had different policies but essentially we all rank ordered students. We argued over some things like motivation and so on. But nothing is perfect.

Very few schools only used one piece of evidence. In fact that was against guidance. the stuff about mocks over the last few days, though, does show how obsessed our current lot are with exams ,as if they are the only information that makes up performance. I understand quite a few exam boards challenged their declaration about mocks.

Rather famously, Ofqual told us at the time of doing it to be positive and give a best possible grade!! I genuinely think this is what happens when you put only stattos in charge of things. they genuinely didn't think schools (or pupils! Or parents!0 would mind because 'computer says no'.

OrangeCinnamon1 · 17/08/2020 17:15

Can we just take a moment to think of all the school staff who will probably be forced to work this out/stuff envelopes very last minute!

BBC News of course now called DDU news at Ofqual HQ Wink

ealingwestmum · 17/08/2020 17:25

Is it wrong at this stage to admit to having a girlie crush on Andy Burnham? Grin

Seriously, no political bias here...just a thoroughly honest, decent chap who speaks utter sense

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2020 17:27

So does any teacher know how we will get results?

Will that at least be joined up?

So will students get both grades.

Get their algorithm grade but if they think it's wrong ask for CAG and to use that?

Get given one grade which is the highest if CAG or government one without actually knowing?

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2020 17:29

🤣🤣🤣
Rhubardandcustard · 17/08/2020 17:30

So the rank order no longer matters - not that we were going to be told this anyway?

EwwSprouts · 17/08/2020 17:30

Excellent move by the government. Overdue but lifts the stress for everyone in this dismal year.

FoolsAssassin · 17/08/2020 17:31

I feel bad for the teachers who had to allocate the low marks. There was sort of originally a layer of protection but not now.

Confusedbutheyho · 17/08/2020 17:35

@itsgettingweird wondering the same!

stoneysongs · 17/08/2020 17:37

I seem to remember our school started off by saying we wouldn't ever see the CAGs so they might be a bit Confused about CAGs not only being shared with the students but that their futures now depend on them.

ThankyouPeter · 17/08/2020 17:40

@FoolsAssassin

I was just thinking the same. They are now totally responsible for the grades and I wouldn't want to be a teacher on Thursday.
Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/08/2020 17:40

Fools, I was thinking the same.
DD’s history teacher is going to get both barrels from me if he gave her a stupid CAG! 😖😂

stoneysongs · 17/08/2020 17:43

Sorry @ClarasZoo Gav has now said there will be an appeals process but mocks not part of it

neutralintelligence · 17/08/2020 17:44

@singingstones - exactly! Awkward for those schools who know a pupil got a better mock grade but they didn't think the pupil was capable of it really. Really awkward!
I can't imagine feeling all that kindly towards any teacher who gave my DS a CAG lower than his mock. Or the school if it was down-moderation by the school. Should be interesting.

neutralintelligence · 17/08/2020 17:45

Lots of us thinking the same thing.
Sorry, teachers.
But a CAG lower than mock is going to be an issue for many.
