Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

@KingscoteStaff

DD’s school have confirmed that they will use CAGs for Internal and external entrance into their 6th form.

Card from Granny this morning, saying how proud she is of all DD’s hard work and enclosing some money and instructions to ‘spend it frivolously’! DD has obediently headed off to get her nails done!

Aww how lovely. And I'm glad your dd has gone off to do something nice.

@mummabear74

I do hope the suggestions of a 4pm announcement about a u-turn are correct. I recall watching the press conference re Dominic Cummings expecting an apology and resignation and was aghast how things unfolded.
Please tell me they haven't promised an announcement from the rose garden.

That'll set my teeth itching!

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2020 15:05

@Janie74

Breaking news that Wales is awarding CAGs for both A-levels and GCSEs.
That's good for wales too.

If the uk weren't announcing that at 4pm are they scrambling around now changing their minds?

123rd · 17/08/2020 15:09

They can trot out darling Dom from anywhere if that's what they are going to say at 4

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2020 15:09

@ClarasZoo

What happens if your mock was higher than your CAG? Quadruple lock??!!
It would be very unlikely to be this way round I would have thought?

I know ds exceeded his expected grade in science (he got a 9!) but he knows pulling that out on the day would have been 50/50. If his CAG was 8 I would have thought that fair enough if 6/7 students pulled out 9's continuously.

But don't confuse the poor people at the top with the idea of a quadruple lock.

They've struggle with triple lock pensions and then exam results. I think counting to 4 will cause them to implode Grin

BarefootHippieChick · 17/08/2020 15:10

devlesko as far as I understand they'll get the highest grades, Welsh minister said for those children who were predicted higher grades by the system, then those grades will stand.

Shimy · 17/08/2020 15:15

Good news from Wales. Praying they see sense in England and follow suit and not try to make some daft point by being different Hmm.

LillyM50 · 17/08/2020 15:21

Made myself a coffee ... 40 min to go. Brew I am ready for good news.

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2020 15:21

I assume they will not issue the calculated grades for GCSE now, so we will never know what would have happened! It would be impossible to treat England differently.

Strange for school, they can get their results slips done really early.

We can all stop worrying and get our lives back!

Zandathepanda · 17/08/2020 15:21

Dominic Raab
Or
Dominic Raaa
Or
Dominic Ruuu

.....Depending on which type of school and how many he had in the class and how many pupils from his school got the grades he needed in the past three years.

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2020 15:22

@Devlesko has your DC been given GCSE or A level grades? Higher A level grades will be kept in Wales, but I don't think anyone knows their GCSE grades.

Devlesko · 17/08/2020 15:30

A very inflated GCSE English. From 4/5 to 6/7
She's over the moon and quite hysterical as she can barely write her own name.
She's been having extra lessons (weekly at school) and has come on leaps and bounds, but not to that level. Also awarded extra time in the exams for core subjects.
I'm being selfish as she only took 7 GCSEs 2 of which are science which she'll probably fail and Maths, also likely to be a failure.
So one pass is absolutely heaven to her.

MirandaWest · 17/08/2020 15:31

Until DS has a slip of paper in his hands with his results I won’t believe anything

ClarasZoo · 17/08/2020 15:32

So much better for a whole cohort of children to feel like winners rather than losers! I am happy...

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2020 15:34

@Devlesko how did she get the grade? Is it a CAG? The calculated grades have not been issued.

Northumberlandlass · 17/08/2020 15:34

News on bbc saying NI are about to announce that A-level grades will also be moved to CAGs

ClarasZoo · 17/08/2020 15:36

Cmon now- quadruple lock!!!! It did make me smile on the news last night when I saw an A level student on a protest holding a placard which read”Your ruining our futures”. Maybe not an A star for English to that kid!!!

Devlesko · 17/08/2020 15:37

Monkey

igcse, they were released earlier than GCSE.
I am fully supportive of CAG being used though, honestly.
It needs to be a fair system, but also stressing that it's not true that private schools won't be affected as they have been too.

Janie74 · 17/08/2020 15:38

NI are giving CAGs for A-levels now too Grin

Just England lagging behind then... Hmm

estherfrewen · 17/08/2020 15:41

Just had good email from school re will be using CAGs for sixth form entry and that students will get CAGs on Thursday with their algorithm results. Also that with the ever changing system they will appeal anything they need to but they have no clue as to what the situation will be by Thursday and know as much or as little as the parents!

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2020 15:43

@Devlesko seems like your DD bagged a bonus! Grin

Don't feel bad, there are a number of people with weird upgrades - remember loads got ridiculous downgrades and the grades were right over all. She just got lucky in the way DS1 did when English Literature had a question identical to one their teacher had made up for them just before they finished their course. Every year people get surprising grades and sometimes it is a nice surprise!

RedskyAtnight · 17/08/2020 15:44

Is the 4pm announcement being televised anywhere, do we know?

Northumberlandlass · 17/08/2020 15:46

I don’t know @RedskyAtnight - I’m working with bbc website in background.

Is it now wrong to want to know what they would’ve got?!

Northumberlandlass · 17/08/2020 15:46

I’m jumping the gun..... 🙄
