Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

Our school has also just sent an email to say they will be using their assessed grades for entry to the 6th form & aim to admit everyone who wants to stay on.

IHeartHarryStyles · 17/08/2020 13:20

Our school have also confirmed they will use CAG’s for incoming students to sixth form from other schools. I couldn’t be more impressed with them.

RedskyAtnight · 17/08/2020 13:29

Flowering I think I got the exact same email from my MP.

pollywollydoodler · 17/08/2020 13:31

De-lurking as I'm getting anxious for DD. Mock results or teacher's assessments should be enough to get her onto the course she wants but she got a 5 in her English Lang mock (they didn't do Eng lit ones) and her report prediction was a 6. I'm worried that she could be bumped down and that that would prevent her from doing A Levels this year. It is such an ill thought through shambles and so anxiety-provoking.

Downing Street rules out delaying GCSE results

"We will not be delaying GCSE results," the prime minister's official spokesperson told reporters.

ShaunaTheSheep · 17/08/2020 13:38

Just checked, and our school advised that they would use CAGS exactly one month ago...they must have a fully functioning crystal ball or awesome spidey senses!

FloweringFlowers · 17/08/2020 13:39

@RedskyAtnight didn’t expect much more from him, did you? He will always follow party line.

I must say I am really impressed at how our young people are protesting lately - we have had years of voter apathy , young people disengaged in politics etc. We seem to have turned a corner. I first noticed it a couple of years ago at the Uni I work in - because - Brexit ! Glad they've found their voice again.

It bodes well for the future - they are the future after all.

Dd and I are going 6th form clothes shopping this afternoon - pretty sure her school will uphold GCSE CAGS for entry whatever happens. Honestly, this has nearly tipped me over the edge and my older 3 are years past A level but I well remember what it was like.

areyoubeingserviced · 17/08/2020 13:48

The sad thing is that some schools have already downgraded their grades to fit in with previous data . So even if CAG scores are used, students in these schools are already disadvantaged

areyoubeingserviced · 17/08/2020 13:49

@OrangeCinnamon1- totally agree about the fact that young people are politically engaged.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 17/08/2020 13:53

Totally agree with how engaged young people are - long may it last!

MirandaWest · 17/08/2020 13:55

DS has come round to go and play basketball with a friend. He continues to be chilled About it all which is Smile.

He did think delaying results would not be a good idea though

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/08/2020 14:00

areyoubeingserviced, that’s why using the original data modelling, which all schools were originally told would happen, seems more appropriate than simply reverting to CAGs only at this point.

neutralintelligence · 17/08/2020 14:03

Yes, this is true. I agree. That is why I am less keen on CAGs being mass moderated. There may have been a case for individual school moderation months ago, but it is too late now. Some schools were honest, some self-moderated, some even match each pupil in one year to another pupil in another year so many pupils at those types of schools will be very disadvantaged by any further downgrading of CAG, which in itself may be below what the pupil would have achieved with a lot of hard revision and practice papers etc.
neutralintelligence · 17/08/2020 14:06

I had no idea about the matching each pupil to someone in a previous year - my mind boggles. Maybe I should ask which pupil my DS has been tied to! I do hope they worked very hard and did lots of revision...
All of this modelling and statistics is worrying at an individual level.

cheninblanc · 17/08/2020 14:22

Just had an email from my daughters first choice 6th form to say they will take cags as evidence they would've passed. So her place there is as secure as it can be. Does not deflect from the fact I want her effort formally recorded but its a start

Really good article on HEPI

mummabear74 · 17/08/2020 14:24

I do hope the suggestions of a 4pm announcement about a u-turn are correct. I recall watching the press conference re Dominic Cummings expecting an apology and resignation and was aghast how things unfolded.

stoneysongs · 17/08/2020 14:26

CAGs to be used in Wales 🥳

Janie74 · 17/08/2020 14:27

Breaking news that Wales is awarding CAGs for both A-levels and GCSEs.

Heifer · 17/08/2020 14:27

A friend of mine has posted a question on his facebook page - would be great to be able to send him some of your replies. cheers

Could any teacher friends clarify something .. Historic averages suggest that a 27% rate for A and A is likely in the current year for A-Levels, but there was a 38% rate of A and A recommended by teacher predictions. (Percentages have come from various reports but I think they are +/- 1%). If the predicted grades are allowed with such a higher rate, whats the impact, if any? Or, if the algorithym has reduced the overall grades down to a statistical average is the issue more about where (which institutions, not geographically) the higher grades were awarded? Trying to get some clarity of understanding as, once again, public debates seem to have various complex facets and become slagging matches rather than rational debate.
