Hi mums,
My DD is due to start Newstead Wood School in September 2020. We have bought all the uniform as per the information pack provided by the school. However I am not sure about the following things:
(1) Knee length coat- there are so many in the market, any recommendations for good quality coats?
(2) School shoes- DD prefers T-bar/primary school type of shoes, is that okay if she wears them to the school instead of Borgues shoes?
(3) Trainers- Do they have to be white in colour?
(4) Stationery- Given this COVID-19 situation, what type of pens/stationery (i.e. handwriting pens?) will be needed/ any leads or links?
(5) Are there any essential things/items/advice from your experience which is not covered in the information pack but useful to the young girls?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

DD is now about to start Y11 but some of her friends have sisters lower down the school so hopefully this isn’t too out of date

  1. depends on your DD, my DD never wore one. When it is teeming down with rain she will wear a lightweight raincoat after much nagging. Most don’t wear winter coats they just have lots of layers and warm scarves and gloves. Not much space in school to store and DD tells me a damp cost has to go in her locker and would make everything else wet
  2. most girls aren’t judgemental, it isn’t the sort of school that focuses on fashion, as king as your DD is confident in the shoes and maybe they don’t also have toddler type butterflies on them t-bar will be fine
  3. DD’s trainers aren’t white, whatever old trainers you have are fine, but I seem to remember we bought white and when she grew out of them it changed shortly after to coloured
  4. you should get a stationery list - I can’t advise as I now leave DD to manage her own pencil case, compared to Primary the oldest most battered (recycled from mum’s school days or home made) pencil case was seen as great. Do not bother with the plastic cheap sets, a metal pair of compasses is better than all the waste of the plastic ones that just don’t work
  5. DD did get a small bag (but not the canvas one sold by the school shop) but by Y9 her blazer became used instead. Some of the school books are very heavy - if you can afford it buy a spare one for home of the regularly used ones, print a copy of the timetable to put inside the locker.

Good luck to your DD
