Private secondary schools Hove

Hi I’m moving with my husband and 2 kids to be near my elderly mum who lives in Hove. I’m in no great hurry as my daughter is half way through GCSEs so will wait for her to finish. I’m looking for sixth form colleges for her but mostly for a private secondary school for my son who is in year 6. I’m not too bothered about it being highly academic, just as long as it’s good enough to get decent grades and kids are happy. He’s starting at a private school in September which it’s not highly academic but has a reputation for being kind. We just don’t want a huge school. Thanks.

I'm from Hove :-) Lovely place to move to.
Indie options from there:
Non selective: Shoreham College, Lewes Old Grammar. A few miles either West or East and both have a good school bus service.
Brighton College: Very academic.
Hurst: Supposed to be a great school these days, very good academic results. Lovely campus and facilities and only in Hurstpierpoint which isn't far.
If you wanted a prep school, St. Christopher's is in Hove and has a good reputation, but is part of the Brighton College family and feeds into there for year 9, so it would only be a couple of years for your son.

Unfortunately the options closest to you are for girls only.

From your op, I would take a good look at Shoreham College and Lewes Old Grammar as they sound like one or both of these could suit your preferences. Shoreham is closer if a commute is on your mind, but neither very far.

Great thank you both for replying. I’ve heard about shoreham college. Does anyone have any experience?

We visited Shoreham recently. We have a son in Yr 6 (state primary) and are looking at a Hove school for Year 7. There were lots of things we liked about it (small class size, nurturing feel). We do wonder whether it pushes the more academically able, or whether there is a bit of a ceiling. We aren’t sure of our son’s potential at this stage. Have you visited yet?
