Upcoming girls’ independent SW London schools 11+ exams

Are there any parents on this board with DDs due to sit independent school exams in January? If so where do you stand in terms of shortlisting schools, revisions etc Are you planning to do any work over the summer?

We are still in the process of fine tuning the list of schools... We will probably end up applying to about 4/5 schools, of which 2 are in the same consortium which means 3/4 exams max.
As far as I am aware, our prep has not recommended any specific revisions for the summer, but I was still planning to make her write some maths, English and VR/NVR past papers, as 2 months without doing anything seems too much so close to the exams. I was thinking of making her do one paper a week in each subject, on top of reading and boosting her vocabulary, with two weeks in August without any paper/formal work.

Any tips on what we should be doing at this stage and over summer holidays, notably from parents with past experience, would be super useful!

Thank you

I think perhaps this year there will be a lot more “behind the scenes” wrangling between prep schools and the senior schools to ensure that the same 60 girls don’t get offers from all the schools....no school wants to be caught out over offering but at the same time they know that some people would take a straight offer from their second choice school to a waitlist offer from their first choice. I reckon this could cause a bit of a delay to the process this year....

Yossahughes · 13/01/2021 15:41

To give an example, one girl at DDs prep is a total genius and she has applied to 8 schools as she wants an academic scholarship - a few of the schools she wouldn’t even be able to get to as she lives too far away. The prep knows this so will be able to tell a few of those schools that they can make her an offer but they can be sure that it will be turned downs etc...the same goes for some of the less academic schools she has applied to...

@MumsRule20 - you just described exactly how my sister perceives me
'I don't get what the fuss is all about - just so typical of you Pato'

@Stircrazyschoolmum do you have any info on how many are usually interviewed for how many places at PHS? I usually scribble this down on school visits but these stats weren't so readily reeled off at the virtual tours I did.
I'm not assuming that an interview is even a good chance of a wait list place that might come to fruition. I remember on last year's thread there was something mentioned like WHS wait list moved a lot but PHS hardly moved at all (or maybe the other way round?)
Does anyone remember ?

PatoPato · 13/01/2021 16:29

@Flossietea - still nothing from G&L
I checked their email from last week which said 'In the middle of next week you will receive, by email, a link for the interview. This will take place via Google Meet'
Surely today is the middle of the week
I have never used Google Meet, just Zoom and Teams. Has anyone had experience of this - is it easy?
I'd really like the email to arrive today so I can stop fretting (living up to sister's perception)

Flossietea · 13/01/2021 16:37

@patopato yeah I’m calling them tomorrow for sure. We’ve never used Google meet either and DD has her Notting Hill and Ealing interview on it as well so I’m a bit anxious!

myfatiguehastiredness · 13/01/2021 16:41

Google meet is really easy. No difference to Zoom. You just click a link and on you are. There are obvious mute and video options. I teach on it all the time and if I can use it anyone can.

Flossietea · 13/01/2021 16:43

@PatoPato literally just got an email from them now! Phew!

Flossietea · 13/01/2021 16:44

@myfatiguehastiredness that’s really reassuring Thankyou!

PatoPato · 13/01/2021 16:46

@myfatiguehastiredness - thank you thank you!
@Flossietea - do you think she's reading this thread. Ditto the phew. Honestly I can feel a bit of tension release just because the email arrived. This is all so ridiculous isn't it

Trialsat11 · 13/01/2021 16:48

@Stircrazyschoolmum i think the interviews are sent in order of registration date .
I doubt it is by scores or any such evaluation criteria as at the end it is a cumulative assessment of entrance test , interview and reference . Hence, it really doesn’t matter in which order interviews are taken.

PatoPato · 13/01/2021 16:49

uh-oh...only 14 slots left on this thread before we fill it up

@Oceane11Plus - thank you so much for starting this invaluable lifeline.
Who wants to start a new one and put a nice professional clicky link at the end of this one (I would but I don't know how to)

myfatiguehastiredness · 13/01/2021 16:58

Our year 3 use google meet by themselves for their support sessions so if they can do it, I am sure your daughters will. Please don't get too stressed - your daughters will likely do well in any school they go to, I bet they are all fabulous. I am so glad my school did entrance day testing in December. It took a lot of hard work from our point of view but meeting the pupils and chatting to them is the best bit.

MumsRule20 · 13/01/2021 17:13

@PatoPato well spotted. I can have a go at doing this now. PM me now suggested header and can post the link in this once set up. Hopefully no one uses our last slots. Thanks @Oceane11Plus for this invaluable set up!!

PatoPato · 13/01/2021 17:38

@myfatiguehastiredness - it's the using google Meet for the very first time for our very first interview first thing Friday morning that I'm anxious about. We've all seen what happened to Emanuel this week!
Think I might set up a test between me & DD's email address tomorrow to make sure I don't screw it up.

@MumsRule20 - I think 'SW London Girls Indies 11+ Pandemic Panic, Worst Year Ever' should cover it!
Joking - just go with something helpful like 'SW London Girls Indies 11+ Thread 2'

MumsRule20 · 13/01/2021 17:45

Ok all, here is our continuing new thread (well, hopefully, if I have set it up right! CLICK HERE

WarmAndco3y · 13/01/2021 18:04

@MumsRule20 that’s awesome. Thank you

Gladtidings1 · 20/01/2021 18:04

Interview at KGS too! A big relief as she was so upset after the exam...

PatoPato · 20/01/2021 22:44

@Gladtidings1 great news! Come over to the new threads - we've moved.......

@PatoPato @Flossietea thanks. SHS stands for Surbiton High School. I thought that’s the acronym others use as well. To clarify my DD has an offer both from Surbiton High and Sutton High. However my question was on Surbiton High and whether anyone is considering Surbiton High for their DD.
