Y6 transition - are they getting any?

We received a letter from DS2s lovely secondary school saying that they won't be able to do anything at all with them until September.
DS has been very relaxed about it all, but has started asking lots of anxious questions re who will be in his class etc, which we obviously don't know.
I don't really know what the school could do (normally they would spend a school day there, and have an evening event with parents. Also a member of staff would visit them in primary school), and wondered if other secondary schools are doing more?
He is loving being back in y6 though.

The induction evening is being done online via zoom. We've also had some letters written by current Yr 7 which is nice. We've been advised to order uniform early as processing times are longer than usual.

Uniform! I am loathe to buy any as who knows if they will need it in September? Primary is no uniform this term. I guess I will buy less than normal to start with.

Just to reassure you that DC's secondary school routinely don't do anything until September and they all seem to settle in just fine :) They do have an information evening (this year it is virtual), but that's a bit dull for the Year 6s and more aimed at parents anyway tbh.

Secondary schools are well set up for managing Y7 transition in the new school year and I suspect will be doing more than ever next year.

Hopefully his primary is covering general "moving up" type topics (wasn't that meant to be the point of Y6 going back?)

RedskyAtnight - you are probably right. I don't really know what I was expecting, given the current situation. Yes, I expect they will be doing stuff on transition in y6, but as they are going to several different secondaries it is going to be non specific. I think I need to talk to DS about it.

DS has a class zoom next week and a 121 with his new form tutor as well.
Only 2 people from his Primary will be going to the school but his big sister is there so he is familiar with it and he knows her friends. Luckily his new form tutor is one of DDs favourite teachers so she’s been telling him how lovely she is

Yes, he also has to make a “funny” name badge for the Zoom session and fill in some info about himself.
To be fair it’s a small school so there will only be around 20 of them so manageable
We have also been sent a video for DS and there’s a virtual parents evening too
I think they are doing their best given the circumstances

Anyway!
They've made videos of various areas of the school, from locker areas to the hall to the different subject areas/ rooms.
They've also sent her an activity book to complete and send back. Some of the questions relate to the videos but others are more general: which clubs are you interested in, what's your favourite subject etc
They're hoping to get them in for a meet up with tutors (in small groups) before the summer.
Her yr6 class had an online 'lesson' with the main secondary school yesterday (my DD isn't going there) and I know my DD's school we're talking about doing that too for their main feeder primary schools.
