We have a mini break scheduled to Edinburgh in August (if NS doesn't ban English residents from travelling up) in lieu of a US east coast recce that was due then. Not that the US is any way appealing right now (Canada more so), but DD is still going ahead with prepping for both UK and North America for now.

Whilst there are no physical tours anywhere right now, visiting areas is our next best option as I cannot envisage her committing to applications unless she gets a 'feel' for a place she may end up living in for 3/4 years.

PaddingtonPaddington · 07/07/2020 19:48

DD is set on music and wants to apply for both conservatoires and universities so potential 10 choices. It seems the application for the conservatoires is earlier in October so will need to do open days in year 12 for those. She seems happy for me to help her find info so that’s a bonus although with a science degree and no musical skills myself I’m not sure how much I’m really helping!

stoneysongs · 07/07/2020 20:10

At least there aren't too many options for conservatoires but it sounds like you have a few trips coming up Paddington!

Ds finds it hard to engage with virtual open days but he did do a music subject talk at Huddersfield.

I’m fairly sure college will let him on the music Btec even if he has to do retakes alongside. I just worry how they can deliver the practical parts in small studios with social distancing.

In other news he has a new jazz piano teacher (via zoom at the moment). And his first paid job was creating a bespoke backing track for a musical theatre grad to use for auditions.

OrangeCinnamon1 · 08/07/2020 23:29

Paddington that sounds expensive ...especially as some of them charge to audition Angry

Dd started looking at Conservatoire for Jazz singing but not so keen now.

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2020 00:26

@PaddingtonPaddington a family friend whose DD is a cellist chose Royal Northern because of an excellent teacher (v happy with her choice although she never had that teacher!) What is your DD's instrument? Have you looked into junior conservatoire? Another couple of friends did that in Y12/Y13 and loved it, although trekking to London every Saturday was a huge commitment in time and money.

Agree with Cinnamon about the cost of auditions. Music is much more accessible if you are very wealthy!

Is Bojo giving an address to school leavers at 10am tomorrow- as some schools have suggested- or not?
Anyone know?

Comefromaway · 09/07/2020 20:14

I've had an email forwarded from my daughter's school about it.

ProggyMat · 09/07/2020 20:35

Come, do you think he is giving an address ?

@OrangeCinnamon1 just made a table of conservatoire audition costs. Didn’t realise it was quite so expensive and maybe won’t apply to 5! For anyone else interested:
Royal Birmingham Conservatoire £75
Leeds College of Music £free!
Royal Academy of Music £100
Royal College of Music £100
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland £65
Royal Northern College of Music £75
Royal Welsh College of Music £63
Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music £95
Plus the UCAS conservatoires application fee £26

@Monkey2001 DD plays violin (and piano). She auditioned during the lockdown online and got a place for yr12 &13 at a JD equivalent (not London). So will be busy with that from September, along with county youth orchestra, school orchestra and string group and another local string group (if they’re all going ahead).

Intrigued by BoJo making an announcement to year 11. No communication from DDs school about it.

ProggyMat · 09/07/2020 21:26

Come I’ve received similar but after ‘googling’ Grin I can’t determine if it is or isn’t happening.

Comefromaway · 09/07/2020 21:28

I had similar costs when dd auditioned for Dance colleges Paddington!

Comefromaway · 09/07/2020 21:40

There is a reference to it on Boris Johnson's public facebook page

ProggyMat · 09/07/2020 21:47

Ah, I’ve just re- clicked on the link and seen that there is an update from the last time I looked.

Comefromaway · 09/07/2020 21:50

Not sure if ds will be awake at 10am. Dd will be, (year 13) she has put herself together a full timetable of online classes.

Wheresthebeach · 09/07/2020 21:51

Not heard of it...but what an odd time to do an address to teenagers???

10am? Dd will still be in bed!

As more info comes out about downgrading the marks I have occasional bursts of ‘it will be fine’, followed by ‘oh crap’.

Zandathepanda · 09/07/2020 21:56

Mine won’t be up by 10am. If I woke her up to see the PM doing his normal waffling and blustering about exams, I can’t imagine I would be very popular. If he did a big announcement to say how many children he’s got and who with, she may be slightly more interested. As it is she said she’s ‘opting out’ Grin

Heifer · 10/07/2020 07:12

Not heard anything about Bojo address before. But that fact that it's at 10.00am to Yr11+ just about sums up his (and others) total lack of understanding of his audience.. 10.00am? as if DD would be awake at the time!!!
Try 3.00am and he had a chance

MirandaWest · 10/07/2020 07:49

I also hadn’t heard about it but agree that 10am is an odd time. And other times he’s spoken to any amount of the nation it’s been rather later in the day.

beenrumbled · 10/07/2020 07:57

Yea I got an email about the speech too - I told DD and she did an eye roll, but might watch.

ProggyMat · 10/07/2020 07:58

I’ve noticed some Primary schools have flagged it up to parents!

OrangeCinnamon1 · 10/07/2020 08:45

Do you think he means our lot too? I wouldn't put it past them to be a bit vague.
