Brighton college and Roedean

Hi All

My DD will start secondary school in 2021 and I am hoping to send her to either BC or Roedean. Any help and feedback on how to prepare for the entrance exams please? DD is a good student, attends a state school and probably in the top 10 in her class. I can only afford to send her to a private school if she gets a scholarship. How achievable is it? How do we prepare? I have no idea only an intention. Will be grateful for help and advice.

For scholarship for these schools, she would need to be the top one in her class at state school by a clear margin. You may need to revise your aspirations if you are only thinking about this now. Entrance exams will start happening in autumn term and early 2021. Some kids will already have been prepped for years. Sorry to put such a downer on this, but I'm trying to be realistic for you and your DD. If you can only send her private with a scholarship, this may not be possible.

What about Brighton school for girls or whatever it's called? The one off western road with the cool buildings?

Anyway both of those schools you mentioned actively prefer pupils at that age that are not from state schools. Honestly have a look at BHHS at least it's merit based in its admissions.

@Destroyedpeople What utter tosh. Roedean offers scholarships specifically for children currently at a state school and living within 20 miles of the school. Not just that, they are exceptionally generous at 50% and can be topped up with a bursary.

They also offer a number of other scholarships up to 40% off fees, making it one of the most generous all girls schools In the country for offering free reductions for merit as opposed to financial background.

OP, please be mindful though that competition for these awards is EXTREMELY high. Your daughter needs to be in the top 2% of the country for the Brighthelm award. They also look at how your daughter would contribute to the school in other ways - music, art, drama, dance and sport for example. If your daughter can bring a lot to the table then go for it - what do you have to lose? If you don’t try then you don’t stand a chance. Just manage the expectations for both your daughter and yourself.

How many? Yes maybe as some kind of special concession to show off how 'inclusive' they are there is a special place for the odd pleb.
If they were merit based they wouldn't need it.

And I am not anti private schools BHHS is a lovely school for smart girls.

I am not trolling. I merely used language that reflects the attitude of those particular schools. I do have some experience of them btw.
