Moving back to the UK - Will schools be normal in 2020/21 academic year.

We live overseas (North Africa) but we were planning to return to the UK in July of this year, to Leicestershire. The main driving force was schooling, as my eldest will be entering Year 8 in September and we want him to do GCSE's.

He has been home educated since September so that we can cover the UK curriculum in preparation. The property we will be moving into now won't be available until November, which ruins our plans to get him into school for the beginning of the academic year. However, I am reading that State schools from September may only be part-time, blended learning anyway. Do you think I need to be too concerned about him missing the first two months in school? Or just accept that the academic year is likely to have lots of upheaval anyway. Do you expect the academic year 2020/21 to return to normal, full-time schooling? Or not?

No one knows for sure but it's likely that there will be a mix of on-site and remote learning at least for some of the year (my DC's school have advised their probably model is that children will attend for alternative weeks and remote learn the other week). They will still aim to cover the normal amount of material during the year though.

How will anyone know for sure?

But your plan is long term, so if he is at a school where they start the GCSE curriculum in Yr9 he will be alongside his peers who have had the same Yr 8 experience and will have settled by Yr 9, so I would go for it anyway.

But I would move into temporary accommodation for the start of the year in September.

I am a school governor. We are assuming things will not be back to normal by September.
