Year 8.. should be moving to KS4 in Sept

Our secondary school have a 2 year KS3 and a 3 year KS4.

My daughter picked her options in Feb and would be finding out about now if her option choices were successful for next Sept.

Today her school sent a letter saying options would now not be taking place in Sept and would start in September 2021 when she goes into year 10.

It was dressed up as being in pupils benefit but then went on to explain due to staff leaving or retiring there would be a reduction in staff available in Sept to teach some option subjects.

Has anyone been in this position before. At present parents have been given no more information. Are they recapping work and covering missed content for the whole year? Are they making them do what would be GCSE work for subjects they are likely to drop going forward?
( thinking art, music, drama, IT, languages, history/Geography)

Obviously, I'm aware that core subjects are very linear and even if a school has a 3 or 2 year option pathway most kids are studying GCSE content in year 9 regardless.

If a school follows a 3/2 year KS they have a curriculum to follow each year but if a school suddenly jumps from a 2/3 year KS what are they going to do about the end year of the new longer KS3?
