Can any 6th Form teachers advise on realistic homework expectations?

DD is taking 5 subjects. She has 5 double periods a day (1 per subject) so NO free periods. Her teachers say she should aim for 1hr per subject per night????

5 hours a night?????

She does have a part time job (10hrs a week max, includes Saturdays) but surley should be allowed to enjoy SOME sort of life in Lower Sixth??

She is very concientious and so will do what is expected & more. Is this really feasible.

Don't know how long till Parents Evening.

That does sound like a lot. I probably give about 2 hours per week to my AS student.

Not a teacher, but DD did AS levels last year & there is no way she did 5 hours every night, or anything approaching it.She usually had about an hour 'free' during the school day & maybe she did an average of another hour at night (by average I mean nothing if she had no deadline next day or several frntic hours if she di)In fact I was seriously worried about the amount she did, but she got A in everything, so presumably she was doing enough. She is at a sixth form college which is rated as one of the best in the country, so presumably they set what was necessary. She's now doing A2s & still maintaining she's working enough - I just hope she really is....

too much in my opinion. I give 1-2 hours per week and they have a week to complete it. They generally have 2 teachers per subject, each setting something per week so 10 hours per week maximum. Has she misunderstood? It's early days and there's a lot of info to take in. It doesn't sound right to me. Perhaps she should check with her tutor?

Thanks. Yes she has 2 teachers per subject, and I think she may be stressing about good grades already........ (she did do rather well at GCSE's so has high expectations). She was pleased that got an A on her first Eng Lit paper this week and wants to stay at top of class.

Will give it a few weeks & watch carefully.

DS1 took 5 in L6 plus General Studies (no preparation necessary for that). He was heavily timetabled but seemed to manage without difficulty - out every Friday/Saturday DJing or with friends and worked every Sunday.

She seems to be taking too many. I hour per lesson is what our 6th formers are told.
