Has anyone got a son here? Would like some up to date info. Thanks

Have a look on the elevenplusexams talk forum under the Surrey, Kingston section. There is a ton of info and lots of parents who have children at the Tiffin schools

Allyoudoiscriticise · 12/04/2020 12:57

I don't think it is that up to date.

Lightsabre what are you interested in particular? Do you have an offer and are considering, or applying this year for 2021?

Allyoudoiscriticise · 12/04/2020 12:58

Sorry, I meant to address that to Dilemmas123. We also have an offer

Dilemmas123 · 12/04/2020 13:05

Thanks- have trawled through the eleven plus forum and doesn't seem to be much info from anyone with a child there- just about how to get in!
Late offer from the WL and trying to weigh up against an independent place.
Interested in co-curricular, humanities (results seem much better in STEM subjects), happiness of boys, sports etc.
Money is not the major consideration but is obviously important. Older DC is at an independent school.

Are you looking in the right place? You need the actual chat bit. Maybe register and post there - I'm sure you'll get a few replies.

In the same position. This is what I have gleaned so far. Tiffin parents please do add or amend:

  • cannot match independent in terms of class size and facilities
  • rugby and cricket main sports (lots of teams), but other sports also strong. Not football (only a lunchtime club)
  • on site facilities (sports, dining hall) improved recently
  • music excellent
  • change to catchment means hopefully more local friends
  • change of entrance exam away from VR/non VR will attract broader ethnic / social groups ( not sure if true or just assumption)
  • perceived focus on stem subject (not sure if true)
  • however offer similar GCSE's to independent schools eg Latin and Greek
  • very active parents association to raise money for the school to provide 'private school opportunities and facilities'

I think if you can afford it you may prefer independent route. If not, an excellent school and education. The waiting list may not move as much from now on. The assumption is that some parents previously considering private will now choose Tiffin

Dilemmas123 · 12/04/2020 13:53

@Allyoudoiscriticise- what are you leaning towards? It's so tricky!
DS is much keener on the independent school- probably because we bigged it up so much when trying to decide between that and another school! If he wasn't so bothered it wouldn't be such a hard decision.
I also think the independent is a much better fit for him.

re the elevenplusforum- I have searched and searched in the right place I think..

Dilemmas123 will Pm you.

strangeYear20 · 28/05/2020 00:02

I would also be interested in your opinions. I am also in a similar situation to Dilemma123

MarchingFrogs · 28/05/2020 07:32

So, what did you decide in the end, @Dilemmas123?

Dilemmas123 · 28/05/2020 15:23

We stuck with the offer from the Independent. Not had any second thoughts!

Hi all! How did your children do? Anyone know how many children sat this year for round one of the boys school - and how many got through to the second round?

JustJuice187 · 10/11/2020 13:08

Hi we got through to second round. No idea of numbers but all the ‘bright’ boys from our school got through by the sounds of it.

Thisonesfortheroad · 10/06/2022 00:54

@Dilemmas123 I’m assuming from your post your DS is well into his first year at the indie you chose. What hindsight can you offer someone with a similar dilemma as to whether to stick to indie or accept late Tiffin offer. We too “sold@ the indie offer hard to DS, now wondering whether the £ stacks up as the two schools seem similar in lots of important ways??

Dilemmas123 · 10/06/2022 07:36

Nearly at the end of Y8! Very happy with choice especially logistics wise etc. but he would probably have been fine at Tiffin as well! We may well have chosen that over other independent schools but the one he went to is a good fit.
