GCSE’s summer 2020 thread 5 - And then there were none..

Once upon a time there was a group of year 11 students who had spent the last few years preparing to sit their GCSE exams in the summer of 2020. Then one day they woke up and found themselves as characters in a real life disaster movie and as if by magic the exams disappeared.

What lies next for the Corona Cohort?!

That’s great that she passed theory grad 5 orange, not easy!

I was a bit surprised that they have backtracked on the July release date, now saying no later than normal for release of GCSE grades. Really wish they’d put something firm in place.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2020 14:07

Oh, good - o also . They are bonkers, but good fun, I hope.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2020 14:07

Sorry wheres but this is the DfE we are talking about...blind leading the blind there...

OrangeCinnamon · 09/04/2020 18:38

Eeek @Wheresthebeach i didnt know that! I Suppose nothing can be planned for atm.

My degree with the OU has come to a premature end. I don't even have to submit my last assignment which is what all my work was leading up to. I have even more empathy now, it's a weird feeling a bit dissapointed, a bit bereft, very worried about my mark . I was just getting into 2:1 category.

There is still speculation about whether schools will go back before September. I think it will be hard for Y11 and Y13 teachers to have them in school before predicted grades are finalised - would put such pressure on them and now most schools have told Y11s they are basing predictions on work already completed. It might have been sensible to tell students there would be final "mocks" if they are back in June which could be a major factor in the assessed grade. That would have annoyed the DCs but kept their noses to the grindstone!

Does anybody think schools will want people in for results day? I think they may not, even if they are allowed as there will be so many students having acrimonious discussions with teachers who did not give them the grades they wanted. Particularly tough in situations where university offers will be missed.

Monkey2001 · 10/04/2020 09:32

I meant if they are back in May as June would be too late for the school deadline to get predictions in.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2020 09:42

I am not sure there will be a 'results day', since no one knows when it is. I am assuming they will be released online with some provision for getting them to DCs with no internet access. Could be wrong though.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2020 09:42

monkey there isn't a deadline yet : don't know what the opposite is but we have been told they don't want grades before May 29th!

Monkey2001 · 10/04/2020 10:19

I took that to mean they would want them at the beginning of June and did not want to rush the schools. The boards/OFQUAL have a lot of analysis to do themselves, so they can't wait much longer.

Wheresthebeach · 10/04/2020 10:32

I would hope they wouldn’t expect them in, they wouldn’t be in doing classes at that point anyway so expecting teacher to come up with stuff to do would be unreasonable.

Results day might be more difficult, but if possible it would be nice for this year to have a bit of normality.

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2020 11:01

You are almost certainly right monkey but, since this is the DfE we haven't been told. We are preparing for being told we must get them in on May 30th!

Monkey2001 · 10/04/2020 12:42

Piggy it must be such a difficult thing to do - as an English teacher your pass/fail has a big impact at GCSE and not giving the grades people need for university must be really hard. It should be a really good way of making sure most students get what they should though. Hope you don't find it too awful.

Oh cool. So all done and dusted when exams would have been mainly finished. That makes sense.

I joy hope DDs school doesn’t continue on Lind learning for yr 11 to end of term. Assuming lockdown relaxed I’d like her to have her holiday.

Wheresthebeach · 10/04/2020 14:08

line...not Lind Confused

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2020 14:10

In some ways I am lucky this year monkey as I have a top set so am not holding the sword of Damocles over anyone's specific head but for the department as a whole, it's going to be very very stressful. And I know a particularly - for want of a better word- bossy department member has already suggested a preferred methodology! I genuinely think people will fall out!

But I think results will be a fairer all round reflection of student ability in most cases. So long as Ofqual don't tinker too much!

Appuskidu · 10/04/2020 14:17

I doubt they’ll need to do a ‘results day’-that will be a mass gathering!

They might just be emailed out or put on an online portal for them to log into?

Wheresthebeach · 10/04/2020 14:21

I imagine the ranking could get contentious...DD is in a small school so the conversations between the Geography teacher, and the Head of Geography about ranking their two classes might be challenging...

HPFA · 11/04/2020 09:56

Not sure if a Results Day is a good idea. Normally teachers would be consoling pupils disappointed with their results. How's that going to work when the pupil sees the teacher as being directly responsible for it?

crazycrofter · 11/04/2020 09:59

If schools go back in June, would year 11s be legally required to attend? Or I suppose the more pertinent question - would schools be legally obliged to provide education to year 11s?

If not, do you think sixth forms will run their induction days if they’re back up and running by then? I’m very dubious that schools will be back before Sept but there seems to be a growing opinion that they might be.

FoolsAssassin · 11/04/2020 10:11

I think they would look at getting induction days done if they are open but nothing beyond that for year 11. They will be short staffed as teachers will still be self isolating at that point so the fewer in the easier for everyone.

Reading across several threads it seems that many students wait for their results before registering for the 6th form of their choice.
This is normally done on ‘results day’.
Surely there has to be a ‘national results day’ in some format in order to facilitate this?

FoolsAssassin · 11/04/2020 11:23

DS has one end of June but I can’t see it happening as things stand at the moment.

There will have to be a national results day but sounds as if they aren’t easy at the moment to confirm the date. It’s been said no later than the usual date hasn’t it?

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 11/04/2020 11:33

I think it may end up being the original date but that is just based on hearing it will be no later than that
