Supporting IGCSE and IAL pupils still revising

Are there any other mums trying to support DCs who are still trying to revise? IGCSEs/ IAL/ IB students and I'm not sure who else have been told their exams are still on ! My kids are from England and live abroad because of Dh job .. They worried about home and their schools are closed ( and did so before the UK) but still expected to get back to work for their GCSEs which will still go ahead - I'm worried about them and hoping to find others so that we can support each other.

Thanks ODim I appreciate it's only one, but with him being 13, it was a big deal for him and I worry he won't be as ready come November.

These children will have been through a traumatic event. Some may be grieving the loss of loved ones. I do hope this monumental life event is taken into consideration.

We are waiting for news and keeping an eye on their update page hoping someone sees how unfair this is on children caught up in the same crisis but somehow expected to revise and do as well as they would done before !! Glad to hear we are not alojne though - it does help x

www.cambridgeinternational.org/news/news-details/view/update-from-cambridge-international-on-may-june-2020-exams-20200323/

Looks like IGCSEs are cancelled. Waiting for confirmation/information from the school here in the UAE but seems pretty clear from the website.

0DimSumMum0 · 23/03/2020 23:41

We are in HK and they are still going ahead here even with school closures since the end of Jan. I really can't get my head around how this is fair.

BritAbroadiGCSE2020 · 24/03/2020 00:31

We’ve had confirmation from school that Cambridge will not go ahead. Now just need Edexcel to do the same. Quote honestly if it takes much longer schools should boycott them in the future for prolonging the agony for so many. Once WHO declaimed Covig-19 as an official pandemic all exams globally should automatically have been cancelled.

Thank you so much for sharing this information - I'm so grateful that there are others and we all feel that the same way - just need edexcel to do the right thing now -and make this fair for these children that shouldn't be thinking about exams right now ..

Yes just saw about Cambridge although nothing official through our school yet. Also hoping that Edexcel do the right thing!

0DimSumMum0 · 24/03/2020 08:10

Just an update from a Hong Kong. Apparently Edexcel are still going ahead with exams in countries where schools are open but in light of the Cambridge board cancelling this morning, our school have made the call to cancel all IGCSE exams this year. Schools were supposed to be re-opening on the 20th April but have since been suspended until further notice. I really hope other schools follow suit as it is hugely unfair with such wide scale disruption to go ahead.

aibuquestions · 24/03/2020 08:34

@0DimSumMum0

Edexcel are likely to make a statement today though, and its unlikely they will release to schools first ( they haven't for any other announcements) so this info may not be the most up to date- edexcel could announce they're cancelling today. Are you on Edexcel? What did your school say...

shawarmasue · 24/03/2020 08:42

The problem is if schools cancel/withdraw pupils will not her predicted grades in the same way as UK and Cambridge pupils will

@0DimSumMum0 Morning :-) just wanted to ask if there was a new statement from edexcel saying they will carry on with exams ? Just saw your post and am eagerly scouting for news - thank you !

OP posts:
0DimSumMum0 · 24/03/2020 08:58

Sorry, no, no new official statement from Edexcel yet. As of this morning Edexcel
were still intending to still go ahead where schools are open. That was from our school in HK. But because we are still closed with no tentative date to reopen they will not go ahead.

shawarmasue · 24/03/2020 09:06

Okey Dokes thanks take care xxx

Had confirmation from DD’s school first thing this morning that Edexcel had cancelled.

LorenzoStDubois · 25/03/2020 00:57

Some schools are still getting teachers and students to continue with all revision now that the IB and IGCSE exams are cancelled.

0DimSumMum0 · 25/03/2020 01:08

Yes, same here, online lessons have been as normal.

shawarmasue · 25/03/2020 01:26

Thank you so much !! @0DimSumMum0 and everyone else for staying together and offering support - just going to wake my daughter up to let her know - you like are the best - this crisis as been awful but I've seen such support and kindness that it's really bringing out the best in everyone xx thank you so much xx

What a relief! We've been really concerned about the situation as we're in Austria but DD was due to take her IGCSEs in Slovakia as there's no exam centre here. The border is currently closed and we were worried that would still be the case in May/June, but that the school would be open so she would still be expected to do the exams - and wouldn't get any grades. Can't wait to tell her when she wakes up!

shawarmasue · 25/03/2020 06:39

Haha I meant you lot at are the best not you like are the best ! I wouldn't pass GCSE English today but great relief and news all round !!

VenetoResident · 25/03/2020 06:46

We were waiting for Cambridge.

But what do you do now? Keep revising in case of resits? I think we will concentrate on IB subjects now.

LinzerTorte · 25/03/2020 07:06

DD's online school has told students they should continue studying as they've surmised that students will be assessed by exam or teacher assessment, and their Easter revision courses will still be going ahead. Hopefully we'll have more details soon about how they'll be assessed and find out whether or not they'll still need to revise.

I wish I'd discovered this thread a few days earlier as I really felt we were on our own with this. (Veneto - I PMed you a few days ago, but you can ignore that PM now. Smile)

shawarmasue · 25/03/2020 07:08

Cambridge already cancelled - yes we are working online school work / A Level choices etc but we may also enroll in some additional courses .. languages etc - these kids have been running at full pelt so to stop them in full flow might not be best .. maybe slowdown to a gentle jog ..
