The headmistress of Channing has posted a podcast on the website about offers etc so you might find that informative. Good Luck!

Popetteparis · 20/02/2020 13:26

Thank you. Yes I'm following all of Mrs Elliott's podcasts. Just wanted to know how lucky can we be to see the move on WL in Channing 🙏

Well we have accepted the offer but if we are lucky with any of the 2 waitlists we are on we will be rejecting it ...

Movement one waitlists won’t be earlier then end of feb.

PatienceVirtue · 20/02/2020 16:29

Which waitlists are you on @melissazzz ?

What a carousel.

Popetteparis · 20/02/2020 16:48

Thank you and pls do let me know x @Melissazzz

NLCS and G&L - we want the IB option.

Fingers crossed for your dd and mine 😘

Melissazzz · 27/02/2020 15:16

I am now 80% certain that even if we do not get the any of the WL’s we will be turning channing down - probably on Tuesday unless the wl appears earlier. I will message when we do this so you can call the school - if you are still interested.

Hope that helps.

Popetteparis · 27/02/2020 16:09

Pls let me me know. Really appreciated thank you @Melissazzz 🙏

Hi @Popetteparis Also on the waiting list for Channing...

I've heard from parents with offers that their offers exploded a few days ago and their children are being added to the waiting list... not sure what this means for the children already on the waiting list- the whole things a bit of a nightmare at this point. Really hoping there'll be some movement after the state school emails are sent out.

Popetteparis · 29/02/2020 15:27

🤞🏻 thank you! Tbh we have to wait and see I believe... it's difficult one esp when it comes to C WL! @Lovenaptime

BookishCat · 29/02/2020 23:28

@Lovenaptime did the school notify parents that their offers had exploded? Or were parents trying to take up the places? Such a stressful business!

Lovenaptime · 29/02/2020 23:48

@BookishCat It really is! The school notified them.

Fannyflutter · 02/03/2020 18:47

Yes ! Our Channing offer exploded on Thursday during half term week and we got an e-mail from the school to say so. It said not to pay any more deposits and that our daughter's name had now been placed on the waiting list.

Popetteparis · 02/03/2020 23:27

Is that possible? Do they have a right to do that? Of course I do understand if it was your first choice you would have accepted immediately but what is the whole purpose of giving a deadline then ? @Fannyflutter

They do this every year. City and Highgate also do something similar..

I thought this year they withdrew offers on Friday rather then Thursday. Some people got emails like you have 26 mins to complete the docs and some just a withdrawal.

I am releasing my space later today- Will post here when.

None of the wl we are on have moved as yet - everyone waiting for state schools results which came out 5pm yesterday.

So 🤞 for everyone on wl today / tomorrow!

Popetteparis · 03/03/2020 07:32

Thank you for the information @Melissazzz
not sure how it will work now re to WL but we have to wait and see 🤞🏻 did you get the school you want for your daughter? Congratulations!

OP posts:
Melissazzz · 03/03/2020 07:42

Nope - none of the wl have moved at all - people not releasing spaces as waiting for grammar school results. Those came in yesterday pm, so the expectation is that movement will happen today.

We have another option which we will take instead of channing if none of the waitlists materialise today.

Btw if you read your agreements you can get the ‘non refundable’ deposit back within 14 days by cancelling the agreement.

Melissazzz · 03/03/2020 09:23

Just emailed channing with cancellation

Thankgoditsover · 03/03/2020 09:37

What Channing are doing is effectively using the offers made as in-built waitlist i.e. they'll never go to their official 'waitlist' because those at the top will be the ones with exploded offers. I don't know why they bother telling people their daughters are on a waitlist as it's meaningless.

Lovenaptime · 03/03/2020 10:44

Thanks for that. @Thankgoditsover ...Are you part of the admissions team at Channing?

Thanks for updating @Melissazzz Fingers crossed for @Popetteparis and I!

Thankgoditsover · 03/03/2020 10:48

Ha god no! DD had an offer explode while on half term a couple of years ago - they cancelled the open morning which we were relying on in order to make a decision. Opinions all my own.

It's tricky making the right number of offers and ideally you dish out the exact right ratio and don't go to waitlist at all - those on a waitlist might have accepted somewhere else and they might be feeling less positive towards the school. But I don't think the answer is to incorporate the waitlist into your number of official offers.

Melissazzz · 03/03/2020 11:13

We did not get any of the wl :(.

So accepting 2nd choice school and feeling sad.

Hope you guys have better luck ! I have heard though that this year channing had massively over offered, so whilst have 🤞- it could be a slim chance ...

Popetteparis · 03/03/2020 11:49

I hope your daughter will be happy 🙏 maybe your WLs can also change by next week? Is there any specific reason why you did not consider channing? I can totally understand if you don't want to say no worries:) x

OP posts:
Melissazzz · 03/03/2020 12:15

No, no secrets here :).

  1. It’s further away from us (main reason tbh) then the other similar school.
  2. Dd liked the other school better - only accepted channing to have option to think little longer
  3. The headmistress is leaving next year
  4. Rumours are that this year they have been less selective and offered to academically not as strong kids as before... and that all the kids who were on the wl on the school we are taking were given firm offers in channing ...
  5. Dd got some sort of academic prize / scholarship in the other school (financially insignificant) but dd loved that

So variety of reasons. But channing is a nice school don’t get me wrong - just liked the other one better

Popetteparis · 03/03/2020 12:37

Totally understand and thanks for your lovely explanation! I'm sure your daughter will be amazing wherever she will be going:) i do love Channing Headmistress and very sad she is leaving as well. Again all the best for our girls 🙏🤞🏻💫
