Best secondary schools for children?

Hi Parents,

I'm a parent of two children who went through secondary school in London. Son went to Westminster and daughter went to St Paul's Girls. I'm now active in the parenting community and frequently advise other parents on schooling.

So, I was wondering whether anyone here has had a particularly good experience with their child's secondary school? Any schools that really surprised you in a positive way?

I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you interested in starting a discussion about what makes a good secondary school, or in people naming schools so you can recommend them in the "parenting community"?

For what it's worth I have both negative and positive things to say about my child's school (which I imagine is true for most people). What's really surprised me is how much both my DC have in different ways found a niche in performing arts (not as the talented star, more as someone making up the numbers) as it's not something I thought either of them would be interested in, but they've both been encouraged to take part and it's really helped build confidence.

@redskyatnight I'm more referring to schools that you would recommend and for what reasons you would do so. Interested in all schools, not necessarily top London independents!

Very interesting that you mention the arts, I think schools that encourage students to do things beyond their usual interests and comfort zone is extremely beneficial to a child's overall growth.

Is this only London schools?
is there any point naming eg a great comprehensive in hampshire?
