Brit School Visual Arts Strand

Hi, my dd (year 9) has applied for Brit School starting year 10. She has a workshop and interview at the end of the month. I have seen a few threads regarding the performance arts strands but wondered if anyone had any experience of the visual arts at Brit. I'm interested in any experiences, good or bad and any tips or information anyone might be able to offer about the workshop/interview.

Thanks.

DD2 did the workshop and interview a few years ago and got in although she didn’t take the place. I think they are looking for the ability to work with others and to reflect on their work more than raw talent. Re the interview there was nothing unexpected.

My dd is on the post-16 VAD strand at BRIT and she say it has been life changing. The facilities are impressive and the teachers are inspirational and there are lots of opportunities - to enter competitions, meet visiting creatives, trips to galleries and not just London ones - Tate Liverpool and a trip to Berlin.

The students work in a wide variety of media and there are opportunities to collaborate with students on other strands. My dd is happier at BRIT than she ever has been as she is doing art all day every day (I know this will be different for Y10s) and she has been inspired, motivated and encouraged by her teachers and has now accepted an offer from a highly regarded university to continue her studies at degree level in her chosen design field.

Tips for your DD from my dd for interview: be yourself but be sure to show your passion for art - be prepared to talk about favourite artist, piece of art, exhibition etc. The interview process for Y12 entry was a whole class sketching activity and a small group creative activity followed by portfolio review and interview.

Your DD has done really well to get an interview at BRIT and we wish her good luck on the day. Let us know how she gets on!

Thanks so much Redsquirrel for such a comprehensive reply. DD's interview is on Friday so we will keep you posted. So pleased to hear your daughter is enjoying her sixth form education so much. I just can't imagine my daughter doing anything that isn't art based in her future so Brit seems such a great starting point with the vocational Btec. Hoping all goes well for her and even if she doesn't get in, it will be a painless experience.

Just back from the workshop and interview. It was very much as described by you both and went really well. My dd was relaxed and enjoyed the whole process. She did great in the interview. Now, the wait. Thanks again for the responses.
