Anyone's DS take the 11+ at Reeds on Tuesday? I would be nice to know when people start hearing results! I know on the letter it says results posted on 30th, but I'm fairly sure we heard earlier than that when our eldest took the test!

Are the Yes envelopes filled with lots of paper or just A5 style with one sheet of paper in?

Congrats to your DSs @booradley7 and @frazzledmumofboys! Great way to start the weekend 😁

@ticking glad to hear you have your preferred choice. That’s the main thing.

Well done to all the yes’s. It’s a yes here too! Really delighted for DS. Huge phew 😅

For PP.... A4 envelope!

It's a no here. Gutted is the word. I need time to process it. We made the decision not to tutor (that is our error).

English paper was fairly anti-dyslexia and DS as a result found it tough, so half not surprised tbh. Just too many applicants for so few places and he is young in the year and not mature enough yet for this competitive academic process .

@arpo Sorry about the waiting list letter. My son got one last year and I was told then that they hadn't taken from the waiting list since 2016. They e-mailed a few days later to give us his place on the W/L. In the end we took another offer and came off the W/L so I don't know whether they used it last year.

It is the most traumatic process. The boys are all superstars for even attempting those exams. Give your boy a big cuddle @logfire2020. I hope it all works out x

@gu24mum thanks; I think the chances are minimal. I guess it depends on how many offers they actually make. I’ve heard 2 offers for every 1 place. If so, that’s an awful lot of people that would have to get offers elsewhere and not to see Reeds as their first choice Sad

No here too. Don’t know how to break the news to DS this evening. He will be absolutely gutted.

No for us. Such a shame but at least it’s an answer now to move on from.

It lovely people are being so honest and kind about it all. It is a disappointment.

I’m so sorry to hear the no’s....such a difficult message to deliver to the boys, thinking of you all x we have been lucky to get a yes as totally not expecting it but such a sense of relief x

@paranoidmum123 I am not telling DS at all - he will just know he's "on the waiting list" I don't think they need to know the rejection.

@ticking @paranoidmum123 that’s a great idea I think. It buys time to find alternative options that they can get excited about and gently move on from the Reeds idea when the time is right.

Also genuinely thinking of those who received no's. It is a tough process on all the young DC's and they are to be rightly commended for even entering the process. I hope that everyone ends up with an offer they are happy with and in the current climate of oversubscription for places, a place in a school you're happy with for DC is no mean feat.

That’s exactly what my husband said. And yes, definitely save the heartache until the other schools release their results. He’s already gone to the school office and called me to find out! I had to tell him the mail hasn’t come yet😣

It's a reserve list letter for us, too. Not much time given to confirm you want to be on the wait list.

Does anyone know how many they are taking in, this Sept? In previous years, I thought it was 110-120

So I broke the news to my boy. He came home with a good score on a test and was really proud.

Me: “oh amazing. Btw it was a no from Reeds but I think a congratulatory dinner for your English test”
DS: “oh right. Yeah. Oh. Sure. McDonald ?!”

Phew

DS will be gutted but all is not lost on the schools front. Things happen for a reason.

I wonder if seemingly so many reserve list places they have offered proportionally less this year? With it's growing popularity it's quite tough for them to work how many will actually accept.

@Pyrfwondering , Reeds take 100ish boys at 11 and 13 combined. It's why we liked the school (smaller relatively). Had heard they have 60-70 spaces at 11+ , rest at 13+. So with 600 applying .. easy to do the maths on numbers of disappointed boys and it's also likely all multiple choice test driven :-(.

arpo · 31/01/2020 17:02

@logfire2020
The maths get worse the more I think it through.

  • 70ish places at year 7 entry.
  • Approx 10% rightly set aside for foundation applicants.
  • Approx 12 for scholarships if you assume 2 for each in academic/sport/drama/music/art/head teacher award

That brings it down to 50ish places which approx. 400 DC are competing for (if we assume they had 400+ total applicants and that the scholarship offers are almost all accepted as you might think likely).

On top of that, their criteria make it clear family connections (eg sibling or parent who went to the school) help them decide who to offer to when considering candidates who’ve both met the requirements (fair enough - if my elder DS was there, I’d want them both at the same school).

The odds aren’t great and I’m really worried about the impact on our DS if we leave him hanging on the waiting list.

I think we have to use this weekend to recover and then find alternative options that we and he can get excited about - instead of him feeling like he’s waiting on luck.

We are waiting on Reeds, Halliford and St George’s but have gone for 13+ entry so results not posted for another fortnight Shock

We’re waiting for 13+ too - I think they’re due to be posted out on Wednesday. The 11+ results coming out today have made me even more desperate to know!!

@Didsomeonesay your son will do just fine somewhere else (as will all the other boys who didn't get in) Well done to you for keeping things low key and not making him feel like a failure.
I only came across this thread last week by accident, have never heard of Reeds but thought I would check in as it was results day!!
