Anyone's DS take the 11+ at Reeds on Tuesday? I would be nice to know when people start hearing results! I know on the letter it says results posted on 30th, but I'm fairly sure we heard earlier than that when our eldest took the test!

Nope, but didn’t expect one! Do we think no and yes letters go out the same day for Reeds ie. we are all waiting for the postman to come on the 31st?

Think you are spot on @Frazzledmumofboys

The 31st will be an anxious day for us, with Reeds & Claremont results, also RGS outright no’s coming out...

Agree! 31st Jan will be nail biting!
I’m assuming Reeds scholarship interview offers have been made as they’re in 2 days time.

yes - wish we could skip to the 31st!! At least we would have some answers!

did anyone receive an invitation for their DS to speak to Mr Hoskins, tomorrow?

No, nothing here. Sounds positive though? Good luck.

Hi everyone, I am still waiting to hear from reeds and or maybe our only option. Other parents at my sons school are telling me it’s not a good school academically and students aren’t pushed... us this the case?

Ds is not self motivated but does well when given a slight push. Ds didn’t get into the high tier schools such as Latymer and Hamptons.

A parent also told me that only the odd ds goes to Oxbridge and I have read some posts here from the past that day the same? Any views?

@Mummy2aPrince09 - please don't pay attention to all the school gates gossip about which schools are academic and which aren't. Look at the schools carefully yourself, listen to what they have to say and then think carefully about whether they will suit your son or not - you know him best.

Also worth bearing in mind that the most academic schools are not necessarily the ones that push the children hardest. They are full of very bright, intellectually curious, self-motivated children so don't need to.

And please don't fixate on Oxbridge places. Even at the most academic schools the majority of pupils won't go on to Oxbridge and even at the least academic schools a few will. Your son is 10. University applications are years away.

Focus on finding a school that is the right fit for him now and where he will be happy and supported. That's the key to success.

Mummy2a - just had a quick google and you don’t even need to go into the Reeds website to see that last summer, they achieved 73% 7-9 grades at GCSE. This is really very good when you consider that the national average for schools is 20-odd % and even a very “outstanding” state secondary will get 30-40% 7-9. Ok, so Hampton etc etc probably achieve over 90%, but as long as your DS’ results are within the 73% 7-9 grades at Reeds, then no difference!

I wish you the very best of luck. Also (I hope you don’t mind, but I saw your other thread), this is the time to get your prep head to get on the phone ASAP to the Reeds registrar and sound her out. He needs to explain your situation re- the bursary application; really strongly push any particular talents your DS may have and explain that you definitely will take Reeds if a place is offered. Schools want to offer to the children who want it the most and they don’t like to be turned down either. Do you think your prep head would push his case for him?

Mummy - sorry to go on, but I do hope your prep head is on the phones for you. Head teachers can sometimes make a difference. Not always, but sometimes. I’ve seen it happen. For instance, when my DS sat Hampton some years ago, there were six applicants from his school. 5 got interviews, 1 didn’t. The head spoke to the Hampton head or whoever makes the decisions and persuaded them to give this boy an interview, citing his performance and behaviour throughout primary, his sporting talents and that he would be an asset to any school (which was true). In the end, this boy was still not offered a place after the interview, but at least he had a shot and he ended up in an equally, if not more, academic school anyway.

@dsdddhdcat yes headteacher has been on the case and that’s where we found out that ds has secured an academic scholarship 50% and 50% bursary at reeds. Where I was super excited to hear this and told some mums, they told me his academic level will go down as the school is mostly A back up school and for sporty boys. So it’s put me right back down! :(
My son is sad as boys at his school who were interviewed at Hamptons and lu are not being too nice to him about it.

mummy- I've seen your other threads as well- the mothers at your school sound particularly nasty and clueless and their sons don't sound much better!
I would completely ignore them- I know lots of bright boys at Reeds, some of whom had offers at Hampton, KCS etc and chose Reeds instead for a variety of reasons.
Brilliant news to get the scholarship and bursary-please don't let these other mothers ruin it for you and your son.

That’s fantastic news Mummy!! Really delighted for you. As someone who is nervously awaiting the Reeds results next week... I would be very happy to have been offered a place. (And my son has also been interviewed at Hampton this week). Yes Reeds might not be the fast paced environment of Hampton or other top tier schools but I for one am extremely interested in Reeds for my DS for many reasons..... and academics are important to me. Pls don’t listen to school gate gossip!! You need to get the right fit for your son. And personally I don’t think you can go wrong with Reeds. All the best.

Congratulations Mummy2a !!!!

So you already know he had a place and this is confirmed??!

Is the 50% bursary ok for you?

People at this school of yours sound like bloody idiots. What are they even talking about? Reeds is a great school and gaining a bursary anywhere is a massive achievement.

They are probably jealous. I don’t know why they’re banging on about Hampton and LU as if it’s the be-all-and-end-all. Anyway, results aren’t even out yet. I’m sure they’ll change their tunes if and when their DC aren’t offered places.

Sorry, I just saw that it’s 50% scholarship, plus 50% bursary. Even better - fantastic!!!! Good for you!

(These people at your school are definitely jealous then - the fools). Grin

@mummy2aPrince09, it sounds like a lot of jealousy at the school gates and in the playground. well done to your DS for getting an academic scholarship! Reed's has been on an upward trend this past few years. When Mr Hoskins moved from being 2nd Master at RGS, the stereotypical 'sports school' image has been rebalanced.

Thank you everyone for all the encouragement. @dsdddhdcat I stopped reading that thread a while ago as all I got was negative comments! The truth is that I know academically there might be great states, but there is so much more that a independent school offers and states cannot. For other parents, they might be able to take their children out and put a lot - to parks, holidays, etc but in our case it’s different. Therefore, my son really appreciates the trips, outings and playing fields a independent school can offer him which mummy can’t. But people on that thread just told me my status and my sons academic ability instead of supporting me!

Yes I see what you mean, but all the reason to go back and update Grin

To be fair. a lot of people just don’t appreciate the schools situation in London and I can see why it must sound like another planet in this respect. Also, the reality is that it is quite exceptional circumstances to gain a fully-funded place at an independent school (otherwise everyone would be at it), so this is why people were baffled, I think. But you’ve proved the odds wrong, so good for you!

Yes and I am thankful to god for this opportunity. I just hope they will take my son to his full potential as he’s quite laid back which I don’t blame him for! But when challenged he performs really well, although not sure what happened at the exam days in other schools. Maybe that was just another level for him.

Mummy2aprince, Reeds is a fantastic school, always has been. It is now becoming a lot more academic, it is also a school that is incredibly nuturing. Please don't listen to jealous people. We are at RGS now and Iwould happily have sent my DS there. If you are in doubt, go and meet the Head, he is ex RGS and made me want to send my DS there. (Logistics were the only issue for us). Your DS is a very lucky boy, well done!

Pls don’t worry Mummy about your DS’s education at Reeds. He will have a wonderful time with all the co curricular on offer and the trips, sporting opportunities which add up to so much extra enrichment, as you know. And academically I’m sure he can reach his potential. The head is wonderful and as pp said, he’s ex RGS. You’ll be glad to get your DS out of the pretentious, negative environment he’s currently in.

@mummy2aPrince09 when did your son have the scholarship interview? It sounds like he did really well!

Report
mummy2aPrince09 · 22/01/2020 18:35

@avocadolovein he didn’t - was he suppose to? The headteacher at his prep called the school yesterday to push his application and was told that he has already been awarded a scholarship place, she called me straightaway. Maybe some misunderstanding? I’m not sure how it all works and how my luck is going with the 11+ I just hope it’s not a misinterpretation... maybe they meant they are going to interview him for a scholarship? I don’t know anything to be honest... just sitting with hope!
