Thread 2

Thread 1 Year 10

At the end of last thread there was a bit of talk on prom dresses ( recommend Fonthill Rd in London if you can get there) by @proggymat and @crazycrofter

@TigerMum had a query regarding moving to foundation level at this stage.

Sorry peeps thread progressed without me noticing so none can reply to your queries!

Oh Silverhill, I'm so sorry. Nothing is more important than supporting their health - she's got her whole life to pick up GCSEs.

Shimy · 06/02/2020 17:08

Silverhill So sorry to hear your news and no, you are not bringing the tone of the thread down Smile. We're all here to support each other wether that's good news or bad. Your approach is the best one which is whatever happens it is not the end of the world, so long as your DD has her health.

EwwSprouts · 06/02/2020 17:14

Silverhill we're here for you as you are for your DD. Hope the few good days become more plentiful but we all go at different paces.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 06/02/2020 17:24

Silverhill, I will echo what others have said - please post and let us be a sounding board/ shoulder to cry on. I know from experience how lonely it can be when your DC is struggling.
I think your DD has done incredibly well to even sit some mocks, let alone get such great results, so I hope she and you can see a glimmer of hope for the future, even if it feels dark right now.

Sending you lots of support and good wishes. x

Wheresthebeach · 06/02/2020 17:48

That's lovely news @PostNotInHaste.

@Silverhill do continue to post, you'll need support too through it all. Sounds like her mocks were fab, so that's some relief. You're absolutely right to focus on health, nothing is more important. GCSE's can be taken another time, and in stages.

OrangeCinnamon · 06/02/2020 19:01

Silverhill FlowersCake to you and your daughter ..shes done really well too considering. Her health is most important x

@silverhill, I agree, her health is the most important thing. Ultimately GCSEs are just a building block anyway and they don’t need anywhere near as many as they take. I happen to know quite a few home educators and they often get by with just 5 GCSEs. Perhaps you could narrow them down to just 5, including Maths and English and focus on those?

But if this year isn’t the right time for her, she can catch up later. Life isn’t a race, although It sometimes feels that way!

All the best!

Silverhill · 06/02/2020 19:18

Thank you all for your kind comments. She managed four hours of school today, had a short rest and is now attempting an essay for classical civilisation. I think having a break at half term will help (although she has two hospital appointments on consecutive days which will be tiring in a different way).

Silverhill · 06/02/2020 19:24

crazycrofter
She is planning to take 8 GCSEs.
She really likes her option subjects, so is reluctant to drop those. The only one she wouldn't be sad to drop is English Literature, but it's timetabled with English Language.

lilgreen · 06/02/2020 19:26

@Silverhill I don’t know your circumstances but our DC’s health is all that really matters.Flowers

lilgreen · 06/02/2020 19:28

Just back from parents’ evening. Some great advice and lovely praise for DD who I’m told works very hard and is s pleasure to teach. It’s all I want to hear really. Smile

ealingwestmum · 06/02/2020 19:57

She sounds really determined Silverhill to deliver her best, even if it results in a reduced plan to the original. And has a really supportive parent in you that time is of least importance vs getting stronger. Hope the half term brings welcome respite, even with the juggling of hospital appointments.

ealingwestmum · 06/02/2020 20:00

Perfect feedback lilgreen Smile

dietcokeandwine · 06/02/2020 20:37

@lilgreen that's lovely feedback, you can't ask for more than that Smile

@Silverhill thinking of you and your lovely DD Flowers

PaddingtonPaddington · 06/02/2020 21:06

@Silverhill thinking of you and your DD. It puts GCSEs into perspective.

DD got her mock results back today 6,5,5,4,4,4,3,3,U,U. The Us were for combined science higher paper so assume as it was less than 4,4 it was ungraded? I think this means that she should do the foundation paper but will speak with her teacher tomorrow. On a positive note she was so close to the next grade boundary for many of them and she has 3 GCSEs with controlled assessments that weren’t included in the grades which will bring those up. Overall a bit of a mixed bag but heading in the right direction.

Wheresthebeach · 07/02/2020 08:09

Anyone else's DC's exhausted? I'm starting to genuinely worry about DD as she's very grey. She seems to be sleeping okay, but they went straight from mocks back into full on homework etc. Also early morning revision classes and compulsory lunch time classes twice a week.

She has lots of health issues, asthma, severe allergies, stomach issues so she's on a lot of meds and we're supposed to be starting immunology treatment for her hay fever. She's not suppose to do the hay fever treatment if she's unwell, but she seems to have constant headaches and cold like symptoms.

keeping her off school to rest only ramps up the catch up work so feeling so unsure about what to do to help.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/02/2020 08:24

sorry that sent before I’d finished!

..to achieve. Her health and happiness is the most important thing.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/02/2020 08:25

Sorry, I don’t know what’s going on with my post, it showed me half of one had been posted so I posted the second half and now only that is showing? It’s too early for tech issues!!

DS looked awful this morning. Asked him if he was very tired or unwell, he said he didn’t know and hopes it’s the former. Told him if the latter he is to tell school and I will get him. He looked at me and said ‘we both know that won’t happen’. Have just booked Gp appointment for half term to discuss stronger hayfever meds well in advance.

Seeline · 07/02/2020 09:45

Yep my DD is looking very pale and keeps complaining that she is tired. Similar situation with no break over Christmas due to revision, straight into mocks, and then straight on to usual classwork/homework. She's determined to keep up with her hobbies (dancing and Guiding) although has dropped a dance class, so now only twice a week.

I think we'll aim for a real break over half term, and then try and start revision afterwards if homework lets up.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/02/2020 10:05

I think there are still some nasty bugs going around, my younger DS s b brewing something all week and it's now come out as a coldy virus - tiredness, not sleeping well due to stuffed u nose and some nausea (no sick though) DS1 seems fine just normal teenagery tired.

Wheresthebeach · 07/02/2020 11:22

I was having Tech issues yesterday, nothing posting, so I gave up!

DD says she feel a bit dizzy standing up sometime, but thinks its tiredness. Sleeping is on and off, again due to stuffed up nose. She's having another growth spurt so that may be part of it. It's just all worrying.

Oblomov20 · 09/02/2020 12:03

Morning.
I haven't been able to post because I got a MNHQ week long ban.

But I had read the Silverhill posts and wished to respond. Please continue to post. This thread welcomes everyone and is a perfect sounding board.

I have a very bright but very lazy Ds1 who is getting 4's in all 3 combined sciences. I just can't get him to put in the effort.

Heifer · 09/02/2020 14:14

Thank goodness it's half term next week. DD only has 4 days this coming week so am hoping she can catch up on some rest during hf. She will do some work I'm sure but the lie ins will do her good.

She wants to reorganise her bedroom and has asked for some more stationary to help her prepare. The Mocks have proved to be very useful in showing her she needs to start revising earlier than she thought, although once she started she did work hard.

Got most of the results back now, ?,8,8,8,7,7,6,5,4 (just waiting for maths). Very happy with those to be honest, although would love her to get her 2 lowest (Chem and Physics) up to a 6, which is what she is working at. It's her 2 least favourite subjects at the moment so I suspect she didn't revise those very much.
She wants to take Biology (8) Spanish (6) and Psychology at A level so looks to be on track.

She seems to be coping well, is tired but nothing too worrying.
Fingers crossed it all stays this way...
Me on the other hand, I'm knackered and full of cold. :-)
