What was your average attendance at school?

I twice won 100% attendance for the year in school , I think overall I missed only 1 or 2 days so about 98/99%

We had our main family holiday in term time each year and I had quite a bit of time off unwell. It was probably about 80% i

my2bundles · 04/01/2020 18:04

I have no idea, not getting sick or not having hospital appointments is not an achievement. My kids know this and value awards of hard work and achievement not for being lucky enough to not be ill.

BrokenWing · 04/01/2020 18:38

35+ years ago so no idea, but we would never be allowed off unless really ill and we were all lucky enough to be reasonably healthy in my family, so I guess it was pretty high. Why are you asking?

MaureenMLove · 04/01/2020 18:41

Can't remember that far back, but I have been working in a school for the last 14 years and I know the answer to that one. It's 14 years not out! Grin

JacquesHammer · 04/01/2020 18:42

I never had a day off school

No achievement, just lucky with health!

ThunderGarlic · 04/01/2020 20:43

Probably sick (in bed sick) for around three weeks most years and at secondary level also had random days off to babysit younger siblings when they were ill so my parents could work. No one commented in the bad old days and there was no effect on my grades. Truancy was a big deal but I didn't have the impression that overall attendance was rewarded.

MashedSpud · 04/01/2020 20:50

Quite a few official days off and days spent bunking off where you’d get someone to say “here” for you during registration or just leave after registration.

The 80’s were great.

BikeRunSki · 04/01/2020 20:53

In never skived, but I was very unwell in what used to be called 2nd and third years, and 4th year was full of extended strikes. I’d be surprised if attendance was above about 70% tbh.

isabellerossignol · 04/01/2020 20:55

I was ill through a lot of secondary school and my attendance was probably about 60 to 65% for several years. I wish school had been more supportive instead of writing me off as lazy and assuming that I wasn't there because I couldn't be bothered.

Shockers · 04/01/2020 20:57

I didn’t do a full week in my last two years of high school. I’d register, then go on the beach by myself. I hated that school.

I did go to college when DS1 was a toddler, so I managed A levels that way.

I’ve worked in schools now for 15 years, and love it!

ParkheadParadise · 04/01/2020 20:59

Cant remember, it was years ago.
We were never off. My mum had 6 of us she was probably glad to get some peace and quiet.
My mum would have sent us to school, with an arm hanging off😀😀

Ragwort · 04/01/2020 20:59

Rarely had a day off, although I can remember faking being ill to get sent home from a difficult maths test Grin.

missyB1 · 04/01/2020 21:01

God knows because they didn’t monitor it in those days but it would have been pretty bad. I hated school, had a very ill dad who often needed looking after, I started bunking off from about age 14.
Still managed to get into Nursing and had a great career.

sunshineandshowers21 · 04/01/2020 21:05

i had really good attendance until year 10, and then i skived a lot and my attendance dropped to around 60%. i’d either skive without my parent’s knowledge - me and my boyfriend would ring each other’s schools pretending to be each other’s mum/dad and say we wouldn’t be in - or i’d go to the medical room and be sent home. i fell pregnant at the end of year 10 so i then pretty much home schooled myself through year 11 and just went into school once a week to review my work and pick up more. still ended up with the best gcse results in the year 😂

Roomba · 04/01/2020 21:07

IIRC I got 100% attendance 3 years out of 5 at secondary school. Missed out the other two years due to breaking an ankle (2 days off) and having an ear op (a week off). I had a couple of days off in sixth form due to a sick bug but that was it. My parents were big believers in 'You'll feel better when you get to school' and generally I did. Bit irresponsible if I'd been ill and given it to others though!

My kids are rarely off sick from school. They've been lucky, that's all. Then in December they both had a couple of weeks off with ear infections, tonsillitis and flu like illness, so their attendance looks crap for last term now.

AhoyMrBeaver · 04/01/2020 21:08

I don't think I missed any school. If I ever was unwell I'd be sent to school, then go to the sick bay if I was too rough to sit in class. It wasn't such a big deal then, there'd usually be a small gathering of kids puking into buckets lined with paper towels, and others with damp paper towels applied to their foreheads Grin

DustyMaiden · 04/01/2020 21:09

I had good attendance as I always did registration before bunking off.

Chochito · 04/01/2020 21:09

In sixth form I literally never went on a Tuesday, as I had a dull timetable that day, and it was the only day when there was no sport activity. I was a healthy child and otherwise didn't mind going to school so I don't think I had other absences. But not showing up on Tuesdays would be 80%. Oops. Oh, also missed school from time to time for sports' events.

Apolloanddaphne · 04/01/2020 21:14

I left school 40 years ago. I don't think I had many days off. I loved school.

Tigger001 · 04/01/2020 21:23

we lived out in the sticks out when we had snow we couldn't go in or if we went in and it started to snow heavy we would be collected and taken home. I love the snow now.

I think I was off more than my brother, but probably about 70% / 80% or so.

FloreanFortescue · 04/01/2020 21:27

I was lucky enough in health to have 100% attendance.

museumum · 04/01/2020 21:32

I wouldn’t have a clue. Back in my day they targeted actual truancy but otherwise attendance just wasn’t an issue.

MyNewBearTotoro · 04/01/2020 21:35

I remember winning the 100% attendance award in Year 7. Can’t remember about other years but I’d have thought my attendance throughout school would have always been between 98-100%. I had some enuresis clinic appointments in school hours which possibly brought attendance down and the occasional day off for sickness but never for things like colds/ headaches - had to have a temperature or be vomitting and didn’t have any significant time off.

NotYourHun · 04/01/2020 21:41

I remember going to a college interview when I was in year 11 and being asked about my attendance. I didn’t know the exact figure but did explain I’d had quite a lot of time off sick. The man said ‘about 85%?’ And I said yes. Turns out it was in the low 60s at the time. Still got decent GCSE grades and got into college though.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2020 21:57

No idea. But I'm sure we had to write in in our record of achievement so could probably find out!

Mine was probably about 90%. I was very anaemic and had a habit of passing out. I also has awful stomach problems which I was off with sometimes.
