I've read through lots of chat re 2019 but can't see a 2020 10/11+ 2020 thread. How are your DS's getting on?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 20/02/2020 10:21

In the lower years, the C teams play a lot. It tails off further up the school as fewer schools field that number of teams and payers drop out.

Popgoestheweaz · 20/02/2020 10:38

Did anyone receive information about the T deciders' tour? Or is it just a matter of calling up and booking? We are really at an impasse choosing between it and DC for DS. So many positives in both camps, it's hard to decide which should be the deciding factor...

JustJuice187 · 20/02/2020 14:49

Yes we did. But only because we phoned and asked. We are also having to make a decision between two schools - tricky...

AtomicRabbit · 20/02/2020 21:52

What range do T & W offer for academic scholarships? Is it 10, 20 or 50%?

Or somewhere in between?

Thanks

PiedImperial · 20/02/2020 21:56

Anything from 5%-40%!

I know people who have had 5%, 10%, 20% and 40% offers.

AtomicRabbit · 20/02/2020 23:17

Is that from both schools? I was under the impression W only gave up to 10% academic scholarships. Is that in the most recent years Pied?

turboturtle · 20/02/2020 23:23

@jasmine372,
See here for previous T sports fixtures:
www.schoolssports.com/school/Fixtures_Teams.asp?Id=253
You can filter by sport and by team to get an idea of how many games the U11's would play whether in A, B or C team

PiedImperial · 21/02/2020 06:41

Yes, that's in the last couple of years.

It could have changed since the new head arrived, I suppose, though.

EccaMoldcan · 21/02/2020 08:45

@turboturtle, that's so useful to see the U11 sports fixtures! Do JBugs ever get picked for U12 teams too or do they stick to age group for team sports?

Yey22 · 21/02/2020 09:15

Apart from swimming/water polo I don’t know any JBUG that are playing in the U12 teams at trinity this year (but I might be wrong) the standard in very high. Occasionally through the years I think the odd boy played a year a above but I think they tend to play in their age group exception of water polo when a few might.

champagneandfromage50 · 21/02/2020 11:12

It's very rare for a boy to play in a different year group. My nephew did but he was a sports scholar and it was a different boys school

Applefish · 21/02/2020 12:39

For those who are 10+ and debating finances or wondering whether to go again next year with a hope of a more generous discount - what are you thinking? Although I'm excited for my DS, the reality of our fee reduction will still come with real sacrifices. Having an ongoing debate (with myself) about what is possible....

PiedImperial · 21/02/2020 12:46

IMO it's a big gamble.

The number are against you at 11+ - there are far more applicants per place.

I do know at least one boy personally who had a small scholarship at 10+, turned it down, and was only waitlisted at 11+ (and the waitlist didn't move far enough to get to him...)

Deldee242 · 21/02/2020 13:34

Applefish we are in exactly the same position and no further forward in terms of decisions. One day it’s a ‘go for the 10+ place (with sacrifices that we’ll get used to) and not go through all of this awful process again next year’ and the next day it is ‘no, we might get a better discount next year, this was meant to be a practice’. I wonder what option I’ll land on by the deadline date for responses... PiedImperial that’s exactly my worry!

JustJuice187 · 21/02/2020 14:30

Jasmine372 the hw shouldn't be too onerous. T did a parent survey a few years ago and took on board feedback. Since then hw has been very manageable in lower school.
hth

Mugglingstrum · 21/02/2020 14:38

Both schools offer up to 50% academic scholarship.

jasmine372 · 21/02/2020 17:51

@JustJuice187 thank you re the homework info . With a longer commute and existing outside school commitments I don’t want to overload the poor boy ! After all they’re still primary school age .
@turboturtle. thank you for the info re the sports matches . Hopefully he will get a balance of matches v no matches !

We are accepting the offer , just can’t risk not getting a good offer at 11 plus and odds are against us then as more competition and can’t do this again !
Good luck everyone with your decision .!

Does anyone know the intake number for W this year at year 6 (10+)?

RoseyHill · 22/02/2020 15:46

@Freeasabird99
All I can say after having two sons go through these schools that it’s the best money we’ve ever spent. To see your son develop makes you incredibly proud.

Applefish · 22/02/2020 19:11

Thanks all for your thoughts and being honest - it is certainly helpful - having a "yes" day today, even telling people that he's going and has a place! Really thinking about it all seriously and how we can make it happen?? @Freeasabird99 we are possibly in the same camp re tutoring (not too much) and really wish we had started earlier and done more! @Deidee242 my son said today he wasn't wiling to go through it again to a friend who is in Year 5 at a prestigious prep (not where he went) who has it all ahead of him - as I said, it is a "yes" day! I agree @RoseyHill i also think it is an investment and glad to hear that you feel it has been worth it, on my "yes days I do feel that it is, I know it is!! It is helpful balancing all the pros and cons. But as I said, is a "yes" day! But I do agree the numbers are against us for next year no matter where or what we might consider, which makes the reason why we considered 10+ the right choice from the outset.....

Hi All. I am new to this site and to this thread. We are in a quandary over Plan A school and Plan B school. Has anyone got any insight into the 11+ waiting list at W? I will speak to the school but just thought I’d check here to see what information anyone has. Thanks!

Yey22 · 25/02/2020 06:41

@Alieninjeans Over the last couple of years I don’t think there has been too much movement on either waiting list but the school I’m sure will have more up to information. Goodluck

Alieninjeans · 25/02/2020 06:52

Thanks @Yey22. Seems that other parents on here say last year their son did get a place and other families they know as well. I’ll speak to the school later this week. Next week should provide a better indication Of movement post the Grammar School offers.
