I've read through lots of chat re 2019 but can't see a 2020 10/11+ 2020 thread. How are your DS's getting on?

OP posts:
EccaMoldcan · 16/02/2020 19:01

Thank you @enpot2007, that's very helpful! Our DS specialist sport is not one of the 'core' sports and we're keen he can continue that as well as participating in school sports (hockey and rugby would be new for him). Perhaps we'll give them a call, would we have to wait until after half term? Don't want to be a pain, but we don't have that long to make the decision!

Enpot2007 · 16/02/2020 19:23

Yes do call them! I think they called me in the half term or just after if I recall correctly. I think it will be fine for your son. My son has friends who swim, play squash, badminton, table tennis and fence etc. Many of them play a year or two above their year group as well and the school have great coaches. Good luck with your decision - any of these schools will be great for your son. But, clearly I’m team Whitgift Grin.

T second hand uniform sale 14 March 8.30-11am. Possibly a bit early as boys have a habit of growing, but may be worth a rummage 🙂

KarrieDou · 16/02/2020 21:24

Parents on the waiting list - My Ds was on the list last year and he got a place! Dont give up hope. Just ring the one time to the school to let the admissions team know you want a place and they will ring you if a place comes up. This is what happened to us last year.

My other DS is now on the waiting list as well, we are lucky enough to receive other offers but you never know a place might pop up. I know a lot of other parent that were also on the wait list last year and also got a place. Wait for the grammar schools to be announced and you may get a phone call in the next few days afterwards!

Any good girls school near Whitgift?

LIZS · 17/02/2020 20:37

Old Palace, Croydon High, Wallington Girls?

PiedImperial · 17/02/2020 20:39

If you are meaning indie girls schools, then there is Old Palace in the centre of Croydon (also part of the Whitgift Foundation) and Croydon High a bit further out in Selsdon (GDST).

Or Wallington Girls is reasonably close if you wanted a grammar.

PiedImperial · 17/02/2020 20:40

Xpost with LIZS!

Smiley2014 · 17/02/2020 21:36

Thank you

chalkyc2 · 17/02/2020 21:52

Thanks @KarrieDou - good to know the waitlist does move. However Is anyone else a bit unsure about staying on the list when they have other options? We've spent the weekend talking up and getting excited about our favourite other offer...now not really sure what would do if a waitlist place came up!

Aquasw · 18/02/2020 12:11

Hi @chalkyc2. If you haven't already try and find out how far / up down you are on the waiting list and how much it moved last year as a guide. We are on a waiting list for another school which is much easier to get to and a no brainer logistics wise. I am going to call to see how realistic it is. I certainly would not decline an offer unless you had a firm place somewhere else. I imagine will be movement next week from those who got more than 1 offer and back from half term.
On another note does anyone know how much I need to budget for school uniform?

tundi · 18/02/2020 16:23

Hi all, I wish I’d seen this before, just gone through all this 10+ with only home study. We have also got a T 10+ offer but without scholarship and just trying to do the maths if we could afford it , or just wait for another year and try to prepare him better for a scholarship..BUT Anyone know if co curricular activities (not music) included in the fees or extra as well? I was looking everywhere and I could only find that lunch, uniforms and music lessons are extra. If someone could help would be so great!

Yey22 · 18/02/2020 16:58

All clubs except music lesson are included xx

Knitology · 18/02/2020 17:02

@Tundi

If it is feasible take the offer. The cohort for 11+ is much larger and much more competitive. Trips, lunch, coaches, uniforms and such are indeed extra and not included in the fees.

tundi · 18/02/2020 17:05

Many thanks Knitology, and do you know if the co curricular activities (clubs on offer) are extra charge, or included? Many thanks!

tundi · 18/02/2020 17:11

@Yee22, thank you! I think it was our main tie breaker, and thanks for the help, this is a great forum and hope to see some you who's 10+ DS is going to T.
P.s. my Son won't know anybody as non of his friends got an offer :-( so will be a bit of shock but I read so much good about T in this forum:-) thx

Yey22 · 18/02/2020 17:35

My son started last year at 11+ and has made so many new friends, it’s such a friendly school. JBUG year (10+) sounds amazing and all the JBUGS sound like had a great year x

RoseyHill · 18/02/2020 21:45

Sports scholarships are taken very seriously. We had two sons with sports scholarships there. You will he contacted by a member of the sports staff (you may have been already) to answer any questions regarding the scholarship and your responsibilities in the interim period before accepting the offer. The boys are expected to make themselves available for all matches and training throughout their time at the school, which is not an insignificant commitment!
If you have any questions I would recommend a call to the Director of Sport. He is an approachable, understanding chap who deals with these sorts of enquires all day. In terms of negotiations on level of scholarship.....i personally would not do so. The standard of coaching there is unbelievably good. If you want your son to be the best sportsman he can be, then Whitgift will do that.

EccaMoldcan · 19/02/2020 07:53

Thank you @RoseyHill. My dh spoke to W Director of Sport yesterday and it sounded like they could be accommodating of Ds specialist sport, obviously whilst still expecting participation in other sports at the school. We had been very pro T, but the sport at W is definitely making us think, and W offer is very good (combined academic/sports) so we wouldn't try to negotiate further! We haven't yet had the sport conversation with T, other than it coming up a bit at interview. Does anyone on here have son with academic/sports scholarship at T? And do academic scholars at both schools also have extra work/commitments or is it just a case of being expected to maintain high standards?

Yey22 · 19/02/2020 08:16

The sport is wonderful also at Trinity, my son is sporty and doesn’t stop. The sport’s teachers are engaging, supportive and expert. They have an excellent sport scholarship programme with monitoring. I know many boys last year with sports scholarships for whitgift and trinity that have gone to trinity. I would arrange to speak to the sports department.

Re academic scholarship, it is about maintaining the standard/effort. There are also academic meetings etc.

Both schools are wonderful, it really comes down to what feels right for your child and you as a family.

Goodluck Xx

SoupDragon · 19/02/2020 08:24

I agree completely. There really isn't anything to choose between them other than what feels right for your DS I think.

EccaMoldcan · 19/02/2020 09:01

Thank you @yey22 and @SoupDragon. I know we are very lucky to be in this position, and I doubt we can really make a wrong decision as long as DS is happy. He's still most enamoured with T, and we're just waiting to hear from them re our sports questions. They seemed lovely in all our dealings with them so far.

jasmine372 · 20/02/2020 09:35

Hi all
Can someone w a son who has recently done J bugs at T divulge how much homework they get a night please ? And is it quite onerous ?!
Also if your son likes sports but is more C team material , how many saturday mornings are required for sports matches ?
Many thanks

Yey22 · 20/02/2020 10:00

Can’t commit on JBUGs but c teams play lost sat mornings

PiedImperial · 20/02/2020 10:02

I think Jbugs get a couple of subjects a night, which are supposed to take up to 20mins each, but can often be done much more quickly.
