I've read through lots of chat re 2019 but can't see a 2020 10/11+ 2020 thread. How are your DS's getting on?

OP posts:
Anno7 · 21/01/2020 09:21

W definitely had one sports scholarship assessment for 10+ yesterday, not sure if they’re doing another- maybe give them a call?

Croy23XP · 21/01/2020 10:26

Just wondering if anyone has heard about W drama scholarships yet?

Radmumsie · 21/01/2020 15:30

Has anyone got a call back for the second round of assessment for sports scholarship for W for 10+?

Anno7 · 21/01/2020 16:09

Radmumsie, I didn’t know there was one? Did they say that yesterday? My DS has his specific sport one tomorrow but was invited to that in the same letter as the yesterday one...would be interested to know what the process is if you do?

Enpot2007 · 21/01/2020 16:47

Sports scholarship second round is very quick. My son did it for Y7 entry. U10s may be different. Boys are invited for an hour to play the sport they specialise in. So my son played a few rugby matches against other potential scholarship boys. Coaches watch the boys and are armed with a clipboard! I think it gives them a chance to watch the boys again and from there they work out scholarships. They give nothing away. You will find out if your son is awarded one on offer day. Parents can watch from afar or come back later.

Am I the only sad character left hoping for news from whitgift 11+ feel like the kid waiting to be picked for a team on my own 🙁

Invers45 · 21/01/2020 17:58

@Delices we are still waiting to hear re W11+ so you are not alone. Hang in there, as hard as it is I know. It’s driving me crazy.

Delices · 21/01/2020 18:26

Ah thanks for replying good luck xx

eagle92 · 21/01/2020 18:53

@Invers45 @Delices same here! :(

Delices · 21/01/2020 19:22

I have to say I do not think W have handled this process well - we were told at their open day that they look at the ‘whole’ child an academic success is only one part. At Royal Russell my son had an interview took part in some great classes and had exams and also had a sports assessment day. I feel that they had a chance to get to know my DS whitgift took our money, somehow seduced us and did not ever get to meet my son. The interviews seem o based on exam performance alone which we were lead to believe would not be the case. We were told that by DS was in the list for football scholarship, picked by the coach to be seen but his marks have not allowed him to attend the scholarship days - so we should wait - as they may still interview us. I have to say I don’t believe them. Sorry to sound so cynical and good luck to you both eagle92 and inverse45 i hope your boys get a chance to shine.

eagle92 · 21/01/2020 20:06

@Delices you’re absolutely right! T told us that there is no pass mark and they look at the child “as a whole”. Yeah right! Sounds like W told you the same. My DS really enjoyed his day at RR and the fact that all children were given the opp to be interviewed will hopefully give them a better overall picture! Fingers crossed! Try not to stress too much. I know it’s difficult...

Delices · 21/01/2020 20:20

Thanks eagle92 I am letting go now. My son cried at W yet enthused about his day at RR. So for me this speaks volumes. Often disappointments are opportunities that we don’t understand in front bit Make sense when you look back 🙃

Frazzledmom · 21/01/2020 20:27

@Delices, please don't despair. No news is good news isn't it? The process isn't over until next week, so just hold out till then. I know it must be tough waiting to hear...

Delices · 21/01/2020 20:31

Thanks frazzled mum from a frazzled mum 😂

eagle92 · 21/01/2020 20:34

@Frazzledmom - I think we’re losing hope as apparently rejections will be sent in bulk at the end of next week. If they were being sent out on a rolling basis instead I may have felt more positive...

Delices · 21/01/2020 20:42

Eagle92 I didn’t want to say that bit that’s how I feel just wish they could be more transparent

Invers45 · 21/01/2020 21:05

@Delices @Eagles I feel the same way , I am losing hope and I just need to put this behind me know and plan ahead ALTHOUGH a friend has told me she knows of someone who’s son got called for an interview 2 days before the last day last year!! So there is a glimmer of hope :-) big hugs x

eagle92 · 21/01/2020 21:12

Ooo @Invers45 maybe not the end then just yet! x

T1000 · 21/01/2020 21:12

I'm also still waiting on W 11+. Echo all your thoughts and feelings. Let's hope they have some kind of sprint on reaching out to parents soon. I just assumed that we'd know if it were a 'no' very quickly. As they said they would. And like Dulwich were able to do.

Wobbles21 · 21/01/2020 21:55

Eagle and Delices - the entry isn’t based on exam performance only hence the interview BUT the exam is a hurdle you have to jump to be able to be assessed.Trinity do make it clear that however gifted you are at singing, sport etc you have to pass the academics. I know a very disappointed mum of a would-be chorister who didn’t pass the exam but there are a lot of gifted boys out there it appears .
I suspect Whitgift may make exceptions with particularly outstanding scholarship boys but generally the competition is so great that they can afford to be picky. It’s disappointing but sometimes things happen for a reason.
Many people love Whitgift but just as many don’t. Ditto for Trinity. I know children and parents who were very happy at RR and if your DS may not have passed at this age it doesn’t mean that they won’t be academically successful as they mature.

Delices · 21/01/2020 22:10

Thanks for all your lovely posts we are lucky that we have an outstanding boys school round the corner and I have been worried about the travel and early starts and the money - in fact the whole thing has been unsettling from start to almost finish.... this mothering business is one worry after another . Just kissed DS goodnight with his teddy and can’t believing secondary school is round the corner. They will thrive whatever happens. I will post our fate when we finally have news

Hampton1 · 21/01/2020 23:03

One quick question for those who have already had a Trinity 11+ interview. (I get so confused about which school everyone is talking about in each post. DS has been invited for interview on Saturday. They said only DS is interviewed and parents wait in a waiting room with some teachers and parents of current students so they can ask any questions they want. Has this been the case for those who have already had interviews because I thought I had read about parents being interviewed and also being given some idea of their exam performance?

Also one last question - on the phone they said would get an email confirming the details 1-2 days after the call but still haven’t got one and I am not sure whether to chase it. Did anyone else get a confirmatory email?

Yey22 · 22/01/2020 07:06

@Hampton1 historically this has been the format for the Saturday interviews where as the week interviews you tended to have a meeting one on one interview.

I know plenty of boys that went to the Saturday interview and have a place at Trinity.

If you haven’t heard anything in the time frame they suggested, I’m sure they won’t mind you calling.

Goodluck x

Seeline · 22/01/2020 07:41

Yes Hampton, standard for many years. I'm afraid it means a scholarship is less likely, but a place is still definitely achievable. We had one such interview with DS for 10+, eight years ago. He was offered a place as were many of the other boys we recognised from that morning.

Fingers crossed 🤞

Delices · 22/01/2020 09:44

So we have had an email to say no from whitgift. So I can move on - good luck everyone.
