Data sharing with with a coach from private activity club outside of school

Can a headteacher contact my daughter's sport coach from a private club that has nothing to do with school?

Advice needed please. Daughter attacked in school. 15 yr old threw a punch a my 15 yr old. My girl used reasonable force to defend herself. Both girls been suspended. Headteacher wants to contact my daughter's boxing coach. This is a private club that we pay for one evening a week. Can the headteacher do this? Does it breach General Data Protection Regulations? I have spoken to her coach who said he would not discuss my girl with anyone else. I feel my daughter is being picked on by the headteacher as she does boxing, rugby etc.

It breaches GDPR if you/dd say no. The data is owned by you/dd so no the head really can't demand to speak to your dd's coach. I mean yeah basically this is to be expected especially if your dd does boxing/ rugby and might just look bigger than her attacker, most schools policy if another pupil attacks you is let the attacker kick the crap out of you then whine to the teacher.

On the point about the boxing coach do or don't tell the head to stick it the head will still have your dd suspended. Good luck but on the bright side the idiot who took a swing at your dd probably won't again and that is worth a lot.

Issues to do with your DD and fighting aren’t “data”. Not all information is “data”. It depends why the HT wants to contact the coach as to whether I think there is an issue here.

"Reasonable force" in whose opinion?

The head can contact the coach, and it may be discussing issues more generally than just your dd.

The problem is that what you think is reasonable force could in the school's opinion be excessive force. To me there is no obvious reason for the headteacher to contact the boxing club. They have to investigate the incident and then decide on the punishment, none of that involves the boxing club unless the route cause of the fight is something that happened at the boxing club at which point it would reasonable for the headteacher to ask what they were aware of and what the extenuating circumstances could be which then spilled over into school.

Thank you all for your advice. My girl is quite small but strong. The attacker was a lot bigger than my girl. Coach has warned me that kids who box often get blamed when it is not their fault. Can deal with 1 days suspension. At least we know no one will pick a fight with her again.

I would get your DD to tell them that had she used her full boxing knowledge the other girl would be much more hurt than she is. That she chose to halt the fight rather than it continuing and she is sorry if that looked worse than what it was. And the alternative was not to defend herself and end up seriously injured due to the size difference of the two involved.

My own son used that same defence when he was involved in an unprovoked attack when he started secondary school and my son is a black belt in karate. He chose defensive moves rather than putting the other boy on the floor. My son also does ground fighting in karate so is used to grappling around.

If you dont want the teacher to discuss this with the boxing coach dont give her/him the details then they cant simple as that.

Thank you for your reply. We did say if she had used all her skills the other girl would've come off very hurt. We don't know what skills the other student has! It just seems very one sided. They have the CCTV, they can see clearly the other student started it.

Alright I can qualify that statement, the headteacher can talk to the boxing coach in general about the club but the coach may not share specific identifiable information about your dd.
