Did anyone else's children sit this? How did your school / child do? Anyone through to Kangaroo on Olympiad. Good luck to anyone who is.

DD scored 83 so she got Gold and Kangaroo, she's in year 9 at a comprehensive with a great maths department though no-one outside the maths department will notice.

That’s amazing for a Y9! You must be very proud.

Has she been getting mentoring?

PandasandRabbit · 23/11/2019 00:49

Thanks Noble I am very proud of her.

She doesn't have a mentor - I asked her before if she'ld like me to ask school to get her one and she said no. I think it would be good though. She would love to go to one of their maths summer schools but that's year 10 up and by lottery though it says they make it 50% girls and 80% state from top 1.5% I think so she'ld have more chance than average to be selected.

I just got the books from UKMT and she teaches herself at home though she does have a really good maths teacher at school who lets her read A level maths books in his lessons. He says he can't do the UKMT questions - he helps with the A level books though and enters her. She loves the competitions as does her brother - it's all they talk about for hours.

@ohyoubadbadkitten can help here.

If the school get in contact with the UKMT they can allocate her an undergraduate mentor via email. It sounds like she should be entered for the girls competitions.

PandasandRabbit · 23/11/2019 11:27

Thanks very much - I think a mentor would be great for her.

She has said she's only interested in beating boys Grin but it's really good the work they do supporting girls and would be good if she can do the girls competition.

That's fantastic OP. DD year 11, got 99 so one mark short of the Olympiad cut off this year of 100. She was pretty gutted tbh. She's not done the senior challenge before but has got through to the Olympiad at intermediate level.

PandasandRabbit · 24/11/2019 20:29

Well done to your DD Chapellass, sorry she didn't get 1 more. She should get through next year though.

Getting a gold and into the kangaroo in year 11 is still good though.

With dd doing quite a few of these over the years, I find it is very variable as to how well she does. A couple of rushed answers or wrongly read questions can make a big difference.

I think there is a challenge aimed just at girls in October. If your dd is keen on maths, could she ask her school about it next year. My dd is more interested in going into science rather than maths, so has not bothered with it, but again the UKMT website has details.

IceCreamFace · 25/11/2019 09:32

How much preparation did she do OP? That's a really great achievement. For everyone with kids who are getting gold (even if they aren't getting through) it's very impressive. I've done Oxbridge admission and kids who are getting gold without intensive support should be thinking about taking double maths at A-level (assuming they enjoy maths of course) and looking at top university entrance.

PandasandRabbit · 25/11/2019 23:22

Thanks very much. She just did past papers by herself to prepare, her maths teacher lets her do them in lessons by herself if she's finished the maths lesson work and she checks the answers in the book / online.

She will do Stats, FM and Maths GCSE and wants to do Maths and FM A Levels.
