Y8 revision

DS has class tests coming up but has no clue about revising. Does anyone know of any good guides or advice sites.

Should we try a revision timetable? Or some sort of planner?

For year 8

• on a piece of paper draw a chart of all the days between now and the last test.
• fill in the tests
• for each subject chat about what needs to be revised and how long is reasonable (it might be as little as an hour for any subject, maybe even less for English/humanities if it is mainly skills not content)
• then see how much per day is needed, discuss when it will be done, pencil it in
• allow for flexibility

Active revision is better. That is more or less anything other than 'reading through notes'. So:

• making revision cards
• making mind maps
• trying to recreate the mind map from memory
• trying to recreate the 'list of 7 whatevers' from memory
• you testing him
• doing questions (especially for maths)
• him explaining concepts to you (especially science)
• BBC bitesize for science

He is in Year 8 don't stress to much because the exams don't matter that much though there is something to be said for getting him in a routine of studying for tests. Try a revision timetable with one subject a day could just be going through his books and textbooks and writing up notes then taking those notes and condensing them down even further and repeat with more condensing.

3 x 20mins is 'better' than 1 hour.
Don't let him leave all the revision for a subject until the night before the test - that's a bad habit to get into.

y8 is a good time to try out different techniques so he learns how to use them, and what works well for him. They don't all need to be successful at this time.
