Improving in English subjects

I achieved A grades in all my GCSEs except for a B in English Lit and a C in English Language. I always thought that this was because it was 100% coursework and my teacher didn’t like me but it’s just occurred to me that it may have been because I’m actually not very good at English!.

The reason I’m posting is that ds has just started secondary and his ability seems very similar to me. All top sets, but so far he is not doing as well in English. I know it’s so early but I’m wondering whether anyone has any advice or thoughts on how to boost his confidence and ability in English? I know everyone says to read (and he does), but I was a complete bookworm and still didn’t do as well. I just feel it’s a bit odd to have high ability in all subjects but English.

And apologies for sounding ridiculous!

If he has 'only just started' and is in 'top sets', what makes you think he isn't doing well in English?

There can be quite an adjustment between the requirements of primary and secondary English which may well take some time to adjust as to what is wanted.

Can you make sure he reads feedback and actively tries to address points in his next pieces of work?

(DD struggles with English, but I know this is because she can't spell well, nor punctuate, nor articulate her thoughts very clearly.)
