SW London girls independent/grammars thread 2020

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 05/10/2019 22:56

Last year, there were two amazing threads which were super helpful about exactly this, so I wanted to start a thread for girls due to start September 2020. If anyone from last year wants to contribute please do!

We have narrowed our choices down to 5, sadly not in the right postcode for Tiffin, and decided not to do the Sutton grammars.

So, she will be doing PHS, WHS, LEH, SHS and Woldingham. Also registered for Emanuel but we may pull that one.

Reading this as I have been in the same boat 3 times (thankfully never again!) @abc79 my daughter was in the WL at PHS a few years ago - we were about to accept WHS (literally I was driving to Wimbledon to hand in the forms) when the offer from PHS came in ! It was always our first choice - make sure PHS knows its your first choice as the wait list does move. And she is in the top set for maths and is doing well so it goes to show that there is so little in it between an offer and a WL. I wish you lots of luck and hope to read in a few weeks that DD got an offer !

givemesomewineplease · 13/02/2020 12:54

@abc79 - WL at Putney is still really great and your dd is in with a good chance. If we get offered it we will release immediately as LEH is our preferred option over it. There's a good chance of it moving I'd have thought.

Did anyone else get PHS in the post today? Our post is usually so reliable that I'm very surprised it's not here.

ColaPip · 13/02/2020 13:01

Fantastic news everyone! Well done to your DDs.
@abc79 - sounds like waiting lists will be moving pretty quickly, so good luck and fingers crossed!
Sounds like LEH caught everyone off guard. That was due end of the month I think?!

abc79 · 13/02/2020 13:09

Thank you for your kind words everyone, I am really thankful for all the advice. We shall remain hopeful that the list moves. We loved PHS and so did our dd. Congrats @RevolutionofOurTime and @givemesomewineplease and @chevronrosie, such great news for you!

Paribus · 13/02/2020 13:10

Does anyone know when G&L is sending out their letters? TIA!

abc79 · 13/02/2020 13:10

Thank you @volpemum, that’s really good to hear!

PhilippaFawcett · 13/02/2020 13:18

Godolphin letters due tomorrow. And we have just been offered a place at LEH! Such a relief! Congrats everyone else and good luck to those still waiting for the post 🤞

ColaPip · 13/02/2020 13:26

Congratulations @PhilippaFawcett!
Fantastic to hear all this good news Smile

Sass22 · 13/02/2020 13:46

Brilliant news everyone!! Hopefully tomorrow will have great news for us all too 😊

mummyme2016 · 13/02/2020 14:48

Many congratulations everyone ! Looks like LEH read the posts here. What a lovely surprise!

ColaPip · 13/02/2020 15:04

I asked DC's nanny to put the post away, so DD doesn't have a nosey before I get home. She's just sent me a photo of the post in its hiding place (!) and it looks like a thin envelope,... Tick tock, hurry up home time!

abc79 · 13/02/2020 15:23

@ColaPip you post made me laugh! Let us know when you get home, fingers crossed of you

abc79 · 13/02/2020 15:25

sorry, seems that I can’t type anymore! that was meant to read...your post made me laugh, fingers crossed for you

bashstreetkids · 13/02/2020 17:03

@ColaPip The Putney Offer letter was thin compared to all our others! Good luck (Have been lurking but not posting for a while) This thread has been a lifesaver!

Springboard · 13/02/2020 17:53

I've been in the office today, but luckily had a really busy day to take my mind off the envelope waiting for us at home...
@ColaPip I love your hiding the letter! I thought about asking our au pair to do the same, but there's a risk if something getting lost in translation. I have visions of her giving DD the envelope to open...

Anyway, on the way home now so we'll know soon. And the KGS letters are due tomorrow too so we will have all our answers by half term. And then decision time!!!

77seven · 13/02/2020 18:09

Hi just checking in because sine been reliving the drama vicariously and thinking, “Thank god never again.” Grin I wanted to say a HUGE congrats to everyone with offers or WL offers. Well done to all your girls and I hope they’re very happy! WineWineWineWineWineWineWine

But also, I just wanted to say this... in case anyone hadn’t got the news they wanted today and is finding all this hard to read. I’ve been through this with mine multiple times and, looking back in retrospect, it really is just a point in time. They will pass through this, end up in a great school with the supportive mums you obviously are - and bigger challenges await!

It’s seems like yesterday I was doing this with my eldest, but now here we are looking at unis Confused

If it feels like a four had closed today, chances are it just means a bigger door will open in the future - like fab GCSEs or an offer for their top Choi W uni at 17. It’s all swings and roundabouts.

Plus ALL the schools in this area are amazing and will get a child as far as they’re able to go Their happiness in these next few years depends so much on their friends and this is unpredictable anyway. What will be will be!

77seven · 13/02/2020 18:11

top choice uni

door not four

Apologies - I’m not at the wine, just need glasses.

ColaPip · 13/02/2020 18:34

@77seven - thank you so much for those wise words Thanks. This wisdom and support on this thread has been amazing.
On my way home to PHS results. Good luck all Smile

Stircrazyschoolmum · 13/02/2020 18:41

Sending congratulations and positive vibes. Autumn are you out there? Are you ok? Please please ladies, come back with wise words next year when I’m going through it.. it’s so comforting to hear the wise words of those who have survived! xx

ColaPip · 13/02/2020 19:36

PHS waiting list for us - delighted to have achieved that Smile. DD seems to have her heart set on WHS at this point, so let's see.

Autumnnightsaredrawingin · 13/02/2020 19:43

Hi all,

Huge congratulations to all the girls with PHS and/or LEH offers, and to those with WL places. Everything crossed for you all if it’s the one you want that it moved. Huge congratulations on the scholarships too, that’s amazing!

We were at the Surbiton offer day today and then I was at work and have been really busy and haven had a chance to post... we got home to two envelopes which in itself was a surprise, as the head at LEH had said they would be posted out on 21st!!

And... DD has a place at both LEH and Putney! We are totally in shock to be honest. We had basically written LEH off after her interview, and Putney we were hopeful but not convinced!

So we will be turning Surbiton down tomorrow which is a shame because DD loves it, and the sports experience thing she did there was amazing. But we can’t take it over LEH or Putney.

So now the decision will be between those two. 95% sure we will take Putney for many, many reasons, but at the same time it feels crazy to decline a LEH place. But my heart and hers says Putney. Will think it over and make a decision ASAP.

Congratulations again to all! X

Fantastic news @Autumnnightsaredrawingin. Huge congratulations to you and your DD Smile very well done!!

givemesomewineplease · 13/02/2020 19:56

@Autumnnightsaredrawingin - I'm so delighted for your dd after the WHS disappointment. How incredible to get both LEH and PHS. Impossible to choose between so you must go with your gut.

@ColaPip , a waitlist place is a great achievement but it sounds like WHS is calling you. Your dd has done so brilliantly with her offers.

Autumnnightsaredrawingin · 13/02/2020 20:01

Thanks @ColaPip x

@givemesomewineplease thanks so much!! Huge congratulations to your DD on LEH and her scholarship and music exhibition!! Amazing! Are you waiting to hear from Putney too? X

OP posts:
givemesomewineplease · 13/02/2020 20:17

Yup, still waiting to hear from Putney, so bizarre that it didn't appear today. Huge thanks to LEH for posting over a week early, that helps so much with decision-making process. Love the school, it really is my absolute favourite in terms of thoughtfulness and encouragement. Between LEH and Putney, LEH is our favourite (and logistically easier). So including Putney, we're expecting to hear from 6 schools tomorrow, but I feel so much calmer now that we have a favourite offer in hand.
