Revise for test but book being marked?

Hi,

My DC was set homework to revise for a mid-term test last week. The test is this week. His book has been with the teacher for marking since the homework was set and so he doesn’t have it to help with revision.

This isn’t the first time this has happened (although first time with this teacher).

It seems really peculiar to me to give them a test and not ensure that they have their books to revise from. Is this unusual?

(I’m also aware that it could be that my DC should’ve picked up the book but hasn’t).

My DC nearly always use other resources than their school notes, to revise for tests (in the case of DS, that's because his school notes are pretty woeful!). It certainly doesn't feel that school books are the meant to be the be all and end all of what they've learned, as they were when I was younger (late 40s now).

That said, has your DS asked the teacher? It may be they have just overlooked they have the books.

What year is he in? If year 7 or 8 I find their books area usually useless for revision anyway. At that age they dont make notes, although they might write down the odd definition or label a diagram or two.

If you know the topic of the test, look up bbc bitesize or find some YouTube revision videos.

He’s Y10. And yes, up until now his books haven’t exactly been a stellar record of anything). I’ve asked him to go to teacher and ask for book (trouble is he’s incredibly quiet and lacks self confidence at school so will hate speaking to a teacher).

If he is y10 then these will be GCSE courses?
maybe ask the school if they are going to help with bulk buying revision guides, and if so when. DD2 is y10 and for some subjects we use the guides far more than her notes. (some GCSE courses started in y9)
